NEW YORK –  No. 3 seed Providence and No. 5 seed Butler won their first round matches on Saturday to move on to semifinal action in the 2019 BIG EAST Men’s Soccer Championship presented by Jeep. Both winners shutout their opponents. Providence knocked off No. 6 Marquette, 3-0, at Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium in the afternoon opener.  Butler earned the road win, 1-0, over Creighton at Morrison Stadium
 
No. 5 seed Butler will travel to Washington, D.C., to face top-seed Georgetown in the first semifinal at 1 p.m. ET on Wednesday, Nov. 13. No. 3 seed Providence will travel to No. 2 seed St. John’s in Queens for the second semifinal at 6 p.m. Both games will air on the BIG EAST Digital Network presented by SoFi.
 
No. 3 seed Providence 3, No. 6 seed Marquette 0
Three different players scored for the Friars as Providence shutout Marquette for the second time this season. I the 29th minute, freshman Esben Wolf scored first for Providence, capitalizing on a corner kick from Joao Serrano. The Friars scored again in the 62nd minute, on a tip in by Trevor Davock. Danny broke away from the defender but was challenged to the ground by the Marquette goalie. Davock was not far behind the play and scored on an open net.  In the 79th minute, Providence scored an extra insurance goal scored by Paulo Lima. Providence goalie Austin Aviza recorded his eighth shutout of the year with two saves. The Friars had seven shots on goal compared to the Golden Eagles' two and had the advantage in corner kicks, 8-2.

Butler Freshman Wilmer Cabrera, Jr. netted a penalty kick in the 84th minute, which proved to the difference in the match. The penalty kick was set up by a foul just outside the top of the 18. On the ensuing free kick, a Creighton defender jumped with an arm extended in an attempt to deflect Jack Haywood's kick. For Cabrera, Jr., it was his eighth goal of the season, and his sixth game-winner. Sophomore keeper Gabriel Gjergji made two saves in posting his sixth shutout of the season. Saturday's win avenges a 2-1 (2OT) loss at Creighton seven days ago. Creighton held slight edges in both shots (12-11) and corner kicks (8-6).
