MBB Minute -- Powell's Performance Almost Tops Michigan St., Georgetown Loses to Penn St.
Myles Powell poured in 37 points, but Seton Hall fell in the final minute to Michigan State, losing 76-73 in front of 14,051 at the Prudential Center in the finale of the Gavitt Tipoff Games. In the other Gavitt Games matchup, Penn State won 81-66 at Georgetown.
The Pirates, ranked 12th by Associated Press, led 73-72 with two free throws from Powell with 43 seconds left, but the third-ranked Spartans scored the game’s final four points. Powell, who sprained his ankle last Saturday, made 6-of-14 from 3-point range. The 37-point effort was the second highest of his career. The Hall’s Myles Cale added 12 points, which included 3-of-4 from beyond the arc.
At Georgetown, the Hoyas’ Omer Yurtseven posted this third straight double-double, but the Hoyas trailed most of the game in the loss to Penn State. Yurtseven finished with 16 points and 10 rebounds. James Akinjo was the only other GU player to reach double figures, scoring 13 points.
The lone game on Friday’s BIG EAST schedule has Xavier hosting Missouri State at 7 p.m. ET on FSN. The Musketeers will be aiming to finish a four-game homestand unbeaten. Tyrique Jones leads Xavier with a 14.3 scoring average and an 8.5 rebounding mark. Missouri State is the preseason favorite to win the Missouri Valley Conference.
A six-game Saturday slate, which includes five games on FS2, starts at noon ET when Villanova hosts Ohio U. on FS2.
The other FS2 telecasts are Saint Peter’s at Providence at 2 p.m., Vermont at St. John’s at 4 p.m., Louisiana Tech at Creighton at 6 p.m. and Wofford at Butler at 8 p.m. St. John’s and Butler will be aiming to stay unbeaten. Both are 3-0.
The only game not on FS2 is Cornell at DePaul on FSN at 1 p.m. The Blue Demons (4-0), who are coming off a 93-78 win at Iowa, will be pursuing to start 5-0 for the first time since 1986-87.
