WASHINGTON, D.C.  –
 No. 1 seed Georgetown and No. 3 seed Providence meet on Sunday in the final of the 2019 BIG EAST Men’s Soccer Championship presented by Jeep. The game will air on FS2 at noon with John Fanta, Jamie Watson and Meghan Caffrey on the call from Shaw Field in Washington, D.C. The Hoyas are looking to make it a three-peat, while Providence is looking for title No. 2 overall.
 
Georgetown won the regular season with a 7-0-2 record. Providence finished third in the standings at 6-3-0. The Friars come into the contest on a six-game winning streak. The Hoyas have won the championship trophy three of the last four years: 2015, 2017, 2018. All three of those years, Georgetown was the host of the final game.
 
Winner of the championship title will receive the league’s automatic bid to the 2019 NCAA Tournament field. The runner-up and others will hope to hear their names called during the NCAA Selection Show on Monday at 1 p.m. on NCAA.com.
 
Georgetown leads the all-time series against Providence, 17-13-3.  At Shaw Field, the Hoyas are 9-8-1 against the Friars. The Hoyas also lead the BIG EAST tournament record by one, 2-1-1. Last year, the two teams met in the semifinals - Georgetown came away with a 4-0 victory. In 2013, the two teams played to a scoreless draw. Providence advanced to the championship game after winning the PK round, 5-4. The two teams also met in 2010 and 1998, however, the Hoyas and Friars have never met in the tournament final. Since 2013, Georgetown holds a 5-1-2 record over Providence. During the regular season this year, Georgetown won 2-1. Hoya Derek Dodson connected on a penalty kick in the 48th minute, and Foster McCune added the insurance goal in the 75th minute. Andualem Chisholm netted the lone goal for Providence in the 80th. Providence outshot Georgetown 11-5, however Georgetown held a 5-3 advantage in shots on target.
 
Providence’s Championship History
The Friars are appearing in the Championship Game for the fifth time in program history and first since 2014. Providence is 1-3 all-time in BIG EAST Championships, capturing the title in 2014. The Friars have never appeared in the final as the No. 3 seed, but hold a 3-1 record as the No. 3 seed in all tournament games.  Providence was runner-up in 1984, 2010 and 2013.
 
Georgetown’s Championship History
Georgetown has appeared in the championship game seven times previously. The Hoyas are 3-4 in the title game. Prior to 2015, Georgetown had finished as the runner-up in 2012, 1999, 1998 and 1994. The last team to win at least three championship titles in a row was St. John’s. The Red Storm won four titles from 1992-1995. Only the Red Storm of the early 1990s and Seton Hall from 1986-88 (three times) have done it.
 
Semifinals In Review
Georgetown and No. 5 seed Butler played to a 2-2 draw through two overtimes. In PK’s, the Hoyas converted four of five as Butler keeper Gabriel Gjergji stopped one. Butler made three and missed two. In regulation, Sean Zawadzki and Achara scored for Georgetown. Alex Lehtinen and Brandon Guhl scored for Butler. Providence played on the road at No. 2 St. John’s and earned a 2-1 come-from-behind win with goals from Paulo Lima and Davis Smith. Smith scored the game-winner in the 87th minute. BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year Tani Oluwaseyi scored in the 14th minute for the Red Storm. Providence outshot St. John’s 13-4 in the second period.
