NEW YORK – Sunday fútbol featured a range of excitement for three BIG EAST men’s soccer teams advancing to the NCAA Third Round. No. 3 seed Georgetown opened the day with a 5-0 shutout of visiting Pitt at Shaw Field in the noon game. In the evening games, No. 16 seed St. John’s staved off a Syracuse late-game rally to hold on to a 2-1 victory at home at Belson Stadium and Providence upset No. 15 seed Penn State on the road in a 3-2 come-back win in overtime.

Georgetown 5, Pitt 0
Georgetown outshot Pitt 20-4 (12-2 SOG) and GU took three corner kicks to the Panthers' two. Freshman Tomas Romero had a solid game with two saves, the team's 11th shutout of the season and his ninth victory of the season. The five goal margin was the largest margin of victory for Georgetown in an NCAA tournament  game. Dylan Nealis scored a pair of goals. Derek Dodson had a goal and an assist. Foster McCune also had a goal. Dante Polvara and Aidan Rocha each earned an assist. The third goal was counted as an own goal as a Panther had a free kick ricochet off his body into the net. Goals were scored at the fifth, 13th, 20th, 66th and 82nd minutes.

St. John’s 2, Syracuse 1
Brandon Knapp and Skage Simonsen tallied the goals for St. John's, as Knapp opened the scoring in the 19th minute before Simonsen put the Red Storm ahead by a pair in the 36th.  Sanoussi Sangary, making his first start and just his fifth appearance of the season, assisted on Knapp's marker.  Tani Oluwaseyi picked up the helper on Simonsen's goal, increasing his point total to 27 on the year. Jan Hoffelner played 45 scoreless first-half minutes to lower his goals against average to 0.57 and improve to 8-2-0 on the year.  Luka Gavran did well to hold off a late Syracuse push in the second half, making two saves in a period that saw the Orange record 10 shots with the aid of a howling wind. Knapp scored in the 19th for St. John’s, while Simonsen added the needed insurance goal in the 36th minute. Syracuse’s goal came in the 69thminute. Syracuse outshot St. John’s 12-5, 10-3 in the second stanza.

Providence 3, Penn State 2 (OT)
Trevor Davock scored the golden goal in the 95th minute to beat the Nittany Lions, 3-2.  The two sides played to a scoreless first half as the Friars held Penn State to one shot. Penn State scored back-to-back goals in the 50th and 54th minutes to take a 2-0 lead. Friar freshman Esben Wolf scored in minute after PSU’s second goal cutting the deficit to one with a left-footed shot. Tiago Mendonca with an assist from Davock tied the game up in the 86th minute, sending the game to OT. The Friars wasted no time in OT with Davock scoring the game-winner in the 95th minute. Paulo Lima lofted a ball over the back line to Davock on the right corner of the six-yard box, Davock settled and rocketed a shot off the right post and in. Friar goalie Austin Aviza earned all five of his saves in the second half, turning away multiple efforts with diving saves.
