BIG EAST Championship Notes
MILWAUKEE – The 2019 BIG EAST Volleyball Championship presented by Jeep begins on Friday afternoon with No. 2 seed Marquette taking on No. 3 seed Villanova in the first semifinal, followed by No. 1 Creighton against No. 4 St. John’s in the second semifinal. The Golden Eagles are the host of the tournament, which will take place at the Al McGuire Center. The BIG EAST Digital Network presented by SoFi will stream both semifinals on Caffeine, Twitter and YouTube.
All the action from the Al McGuire Center will be called live by Bob Brainerd and Michelle Griffin-Wenzel with Piper Shaw on the sideline.
Creighton enters the tournament as the No. 1 seed and the five-time defending champion.

Meeting Notes: No. 2 seed Marquette is making its 12th appearance in the tournament and is 9-10 overall. Since joining the league in 2005, Marquette has won the title once (2013) and was runner up in 2012, 2017 and 2018. It is Marquette’s third time hosting the tournament since the new configuration of the conference. The Golden Eagles finished with a 16-2 league record and a 26-4 overall record. Marquette’s 16 wins in BIG EAST regular season play is the best mark for the squad since the joining the league in 2005. Marquette will face Villanova, the No. 3 seed. Villanova returns to the BIG EAST tournament for the third straight year. In 2018, the Wildcats fell in the semifinals 3-0 to No. 1 seed Creighton. Villanova swept the final weekend of the regular season including a five set victory over St. John’s to finish 13-5 in league play, their best BIG EAST record since finishing 14-4 in 2015. Marquette won both meetings in the regular season and holds the overall series lead 18-4. The two programs have never met in the postseason.

Meeting Notes: No. 1 seed Creighton won its sixth-straight BIG EAST regular season title outright on Sunday, finishing with a 17-1 league record, 24-4 overall. Creighton is the first team in BIG EAST volleyball history to clinch six consecutive BIG EAST titles. The Bluejays will face St. John’s for the third time this season as the Red Storm claimed the No. 4 seed after winning six of their last seven matches to finish with a 12-6 BIG EAST record and an overall record of 20-11. St. John’s returns to the BIG EAST tournament for the second straight year. Creighton swept both regular season meetings against St. John’s. The Bluejays lead the overall series 13-1 while the two programs have never met in the BIG EAST Championship.
