#BEfútbol Minute – Three Seeds Set For Upcoming Championship
NEW YORK – Georgetown locked up the No. 1 seed in the BIG EAST Men’s Soccer Championship presented by Jeep with a 2-0 victory over Villanova to start a super Saturday of league action. In the night games, St. John’s secured a first-round playoff bye with a 4-2 win over DePaul. Providence qualified for a tournament berth with a 2-1 win over Xavier on the road. Creighton moved up to fourth in the BIG EAST standings with a 2-1 double overtime victory over Butler. Seton Hall closed out the night with a 2-1 overtime win on the road at Marquette.
The final day of the 2019 BIG EAST season will be Wednesday, Nov. 6. The championship will start on Saturday, Nov. 9. The Friars will host one of those first round games as the No. 3 seed. No. 1 seed Georgetown will host the first championship semifinal on Wednesday, Nov. 13 at 1 p.m. ET No. 2 seed St. John’s will host the second semifinal at 6 p.m.
With a 7-0-1 BIG EAST record and 22 points, Georgetown, ranked third nationally, claimed at least a share of the 2019 BIG EAST regular season title. St.John’s has 19 points and a 6-1-1 record and is currently in second with one game left to play. The Hoyas will win the regular season title outright with a win over Creighton on Wednesday.
The current standings have Providence in third with 15 points (5-3-0), Creighton with 12 points (4-4-0) and a two-way tie for fifth between Butler and Seton Hall with 10 points each and 3-4-1 league records. If the season ended today, this would be the championship field. Creighton's win secured a spot for the Bluejays.
On the outside looking in currently is Xavier and Marquette tied for seventh with nine points each and 3-5-0 records. DePaul is ninth at 1-4-3 (six points) and Villanova is tenth with four points and a 1-6-1 record.
No. 3 GEORGETOWN 2, VILLANOVA 0
Both teams had chances early with each keeper making saves. The game changed in the 27th minute as Georgetown’s Sean Zawadzki was taken down in the box resulting in a penalty kick. Hoya Derek Dodson lined up and buried it to make it 1-0. Minutes later, Dodson had another chance as keeper Carson Williams came out and the ball was headed over to the junior who had a chance on the open net. Villanova keeper Carson Williams made a dive on the line to stop it and keep it a one-goal game. GU’s freshman goalkeeper Tomas Romero was tested more in this game than previous contests as he was forced to come up with a few big stops. GU got the insurance goal in the 73rd minute on a counter. Dodson went to Montes who sent it to Achara for the shot. His effort was saved off of the line by a Wildcat defender, but the rebound went back to Montes who put it right back in to make it 2-0. Romero managed four saves in the win and his sixth shutout of the year. Williams tallied nine saves and took the loss for Villanova.
PROVIDENCE 2, XAVIER 1
Providence defeated Xavier, 2-1, in their final road game of the season. Both goals for the Friars were scored in the last 10 minutes of play. The Musketeers scored in the 34th minute to put them up, 1-0. Samson Sergi beat the Providence defender and scored in the lower right of the net on their first shot of the night. In the 81st minute Paulo Lima put Providence on the board to tie the game at 1-1. Gil Santos took the corner kick that Lima gave a touch to get past the Musketeer keeper. Ramzi Qawasmy scored his second goal of the season to put the Friars up 2-1 in the 88th minute. Joao Serrano passed the ball up to Qawasmy who scored on a header inside the box. Providence outshot Xavier 19-3 and held the advantage in corner kicks, 10-0.
No. 8 ST. JOHN’S 4, DEPAUL
With his goal in the 36th minute, Tani Oluwaseyi bumped his league-leading goal total on the season to 10, becoming the first St. John's player to reach double digit goals since 2003. Oluwaseyi also assisted on the Red Storm's final goal of the night to increase his point total to 24. St. John's outshot DePaul on the evening by a margin of 22-5, including a 14-4 edge in chances on goal. The Johnnies also earned a whopping 17 corner kicks while the Blue Demons managed just one. Brandon Duarte scored a goal in the 47th minute to give SJU a 2-0 lead. Jake Fuderer scored for DePaul in the 53rd, cutting the SJU lead to one goal. Einar Lye and Drew Rosen scored in the 55th and 67th minutes to advance the Red Storm’s lead to 4-1.
SETON HALL 2, MARQUETTE 1 (OT)
The Pirates rode two goals from Carlton McKenzie including the game winner in overtime to win on the road at Marquette for the first time since 2006. Seton Hall was the first on the board when in the 21st minute McKenzie put home a cross from graduate student Sean Macleod (Troon, Scotland). For McKenzie, it was his fourth goal of the season and the second assist on the year for Macleod, but the duo was not done yet. The Golden Eagles found their equalizer in the 71st minute when Josh Coan scored off a pass from Luka Prpa to even things up. In just the third minute of overtime, McKenzie and Macleod hooked up again for the deciding goal. Junior Andreas Nota made six saves on the evening, boosting his total to 71 saves on the season.
CREIGHTON 2, BUTLER 1 (2OT)
Freshman Jake Ashford delivered a golden goal to lift the Creighton men's soccer team to a 2-1 double-overtime victory over Butler on Saturday at Morrison Stadium during Creighton's Senior Night. Ashford converted the golden goal during the 105th minute, rebounding a header attempt from senior Bryce Gibson. Butler found the back of the net in the fourth minute of the match to take an early lead. Griffin DeBolt fired a shot from the middle of the box off the post and into the back of the net for an early 1-0 advantage. Creighton equaled the score midway through the first half in the 26th minute. Senior Yudai Tashiro blasted a shot from the top of the 18-yard box past Butler goalkeeper Gabriel Gjergji to even the score at 1-1. Creighton closed the match with a 23-14 advantage in shots, including a 15-5 edge in the second half and overtime periods. The Bluejays also earned 11 corners to Butler's five. Kruse collected two saves on the night while Butler's Gjergji made six.
