MBB Minute – Howard Becomes Marquette’s Top All-Time Scorer in 7-0 Night for League Teams
Marquette’s Markus Howard poured in 38 points and became the school’s all-time leading scorer in an 88-53 victory over Loyola (Md.) on Tuesday. BIG EAST teams were 7-0 on opening night, all with comfortable margins of victory.
Howard needed 30 points to tie Jerel McNeal (2005-09), who was the previous leader with 1,985 points, and he got 30 by halftime before netting eight more in the second half. He has 1,993 career points. Sacar Anim and newcomer Koby McEwen each added 11 points.
Villanova, ranked 10th in both national polls, defeated Army West Point 97-54. For only the second time in Jay Wright’s 19 seasons, two freshmen started. Jeremiah Robinson-Earl, the Preseason BIG EAST Freshman of the Year, posted game-highs of 24 points and 13 rebounds. Justin Moore finished with eight points, four rebounds and four assists.
Xavier’s 76-57 dispatching of Jacksonville was fueled by 17-point efforts from Tyrique Jones and Naji Marshall. Jones also made 7-of-8 from the floor and grabbed 11 rebounds. Marshall contributed six rebounds and four assists for the Musketeers, who are ranked 19th by AP.
Seton Hall’s Myles Powell had 27 points in a 105-71 handling of Wagner. Powell, who played only 22 minutes, made 4-of-9 from 3-point range and grabbed nine rebounds. The Pirates, 12th in the AP poll, shot 61.7 percent from the floor.
Providence used more of a balanced attack in a 106-60 victory over Sacred Heart. Alpha Diallo led seven players in double figures with 19 points and pulled down a game-high 14 rebounds for his 17th career double-double. Emmitt Holt, who was a medical redshirt last season, scored 16 points in 21 minutes.
Creighton recorded its 25th straight home-opening victory with an 81-55 triumph over Kennesaw State. Ty-Shon Alexander scored 19 points and backcourt partner Marcus Zegarowski added 18 points. The Bluejays were strong from the perimeter, as usual, making 12-of-25 from 3-point range.
DePaul streaked to a 17-0 lead and were not threatened in a 72-54 win against Alcorn State. Paul Reed led the way with 17 points, 11 rebounds and two blocks. Transfer Charlie Moore added 14 points and freshman Romeo Weems had 13 points.
The Wednesday schedule shows four games, including a quick turnaround for DePaul. The Blue Demons host Univ. of Chicago at 8:30 p.m. ET on FS2. At 6:30 p.m., St. John’s hosts Mercer at Carnesecca Arena on FS1. At the same time, FS2 will show Butler hosting IUPUI. Georgetown meets Mount St. Mary’s at 7 p.m. on CBS Sports Network.
