Postseason Series: First meeting
The regular-season champion Musketeers (14-3-2) begin the hunt for their first BIG EAST postseason crown on Thursday evening. XU will face one of just two BIG EAST teams that knocked them off during the regular season – Villanova. The Wildcats (10-6-3) are making their first semifinal appearance since 2004 and eye just their second title game showing in program history (2003). Xavier is 0-1 in the BIG EAST Semifinals, advancing to the penultimate round for the first time last season before falling to eventual-champion Georgetown 3-1. Villanova is 0-5-2 in the semifinals, advancing off PKs in the 2003 tourney while being eliminated off PKs in 2004. Xavier and Villanova are meeting in the postseason for the first time, while the Wildcats own the all-time series lead 4-3, including two consecutive victories.

XU-VU met at Higgins Soccer Complex this season on Sept. 29 in both squads’ BIG EAST opener. Brice McInroy scored the dagger in the 1-0 decision, breaking a scoreless contest in the 57th minute. Rebecca Gartner had five saves for the shutout, her second of five on the year. Xavier outshot Villanova 16-5 thanks to a game-high seven strikes by Samantha Dewey. XU has outshot 15 consecutive opponents and 17 of 19 on the year.

Series Record: Georgetown leads, 13-3-3
Postseason Series: Series tied, 0-0-1 (2015 Semifinals – Providence advanced on PKs)
Georgetown (12-3-3) is just one of two teams to win three consecutive BIG EAST Women’s Soccer Championships, joining Notre Dame which strung together seven consecutive, 1995-2001. The last time the Hoyas didn’t win the BIG EAST title, they were eliminated by the Friars in Omaha. Providence and Georgetown have met just once in the conference postseason – that 2015 semifinal showdown at Morrison Stadium which ended in a 1-1 draw, but saw PC advance on PKs, 4-2.  The Friars are 1-3-1 in the BIG EAST Semifinals, advancing in its lone draw (2015) and last winning in 1993; the Hoyas are 2-3-4 and haven’t lost since 2013, advancing in three of its four games which ended in ties.

Georgetown, ranked 18th in the latest United Soccer Coaches Poll, and Providence met on Oct. 6 during the regular season, with the Hoyas earning a 4-0 victory to increase their series lead to 13-3-3. Amanda Carolan scored a pair of first-half goals, while Jenna Menta and reigning National Offensive Player of the Week Paula Germino-Watnick also contributed scores.
