Cary, N.C. – The Georgetown Hoyas became the third BIG EAST men’s soccer program to win the College Cup with a dramatic final at the WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, N.C. Third-seeded Georgetown finished off its title run with a 7-6 penalty kick victory over top-seeded Virginia after a 3-3 tie through double overtime.

The championship game was tied three times, with Georgetown (20-1-3) earning the advantage twice.  The contest also featured the top two defenses in Division I men's soccer. However, it was the offense that was on display as Georgetown and Virginia produced a total of six goals (three in 12 minutes) and 13 made penalty kicks before Hoya freshman goalkeeper Tomas Romero denied Axel Gunnarsson on the game-clinching attempt.

The game was the highest-scoring national championship game since 1980. It was the seventh time the title game was decided by penalty kicks.

The Cavaliers (20-2-1) struck first with a goal from Joe Bell in the 10th minute. The Hoyas evened the score with an unassisted goal from Paul Rothrock, his fourth of the season. Rothrock kicked in a loose ball in front of the net for the goal.

Cary, N.C. native Daniel Wu scored his first collegiate goal to give the Hoyas the lead in the 16th minute. The freshman defender capitalized on a headed ball by Rio Hope-Gund that landed in a sweet spot right outside the six-yard area. Zach Riviere earned the second assist as he started the play with a free kick.

Late in the second half, Virginia knotted the score at 2-2 with a goal from Daniel Steedman at 57:18.

Georgetown rallied back with a goal in the 81st by Derek Dodson, set up by Achara. Dodson scored on a low shot in the middle of the goal.

Virginia answered, tying the game for the final time in the 86th minute of regulation. Daryl Dike scored off his own rebounded shot which was stopped by Hope-Gund.

In the overtime periods, Georgetown outshot Virginia, 5-2, but could not connect.

Georgetown outshot Virginia 14-11 for the game. Virginia had a 6-5 advantage on corners.

Since 2013-14, the BIG EAST has won eight national titles in team events. The last national title was won by the Villanova men’s basketball team in 2018. The last men’s soccer championship was won by Connecticut in 2000. The only other men’s soccer title was won by St. John’s in 1996. The BIG EAST has won the national title three times in five national championship game appearances.
