MBB Minute – DePaul, St. John’s, Xavier Notch Wednesday Wins
On Wednesday, DePaul picked up another road win while St. John’s and Xavier recorded their 10th victories of the season without the services of a top player. BIG EAST teams have a combined record of 86-25 (.775).
DePaul improved its road record to 4-0 with a 73-65 victory at Cleveland State. After letting a 16-point lead slip away, the Blue Demons (11-1) recovered and closed the game with a 13-6 run. Paul Reed enjoyed his ninth double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds. He also blocked four shots. Romeo Weems added 14 points. The last time DePaul had four non-conference wins on away courts was 1993-94.
St. John’s played without Mustapha Heron, who is out with an ankle injury, but the Johnnies handled Albany 85-57 at Carnesecca Arena. Marcellus Earlington helped with 16 points, a career-high nine rebounds, three steals and two blocks in only 18 minutes of playing time. Julian Champagnie added 14 points and six boards. St. John’s (10-2) has won six in a row.
Xavier’s Naji Marshall was out with a stomach virus, but his Musketeer teammates picked up the slack in a 74-61 win against Western Carolina. Quentin Goodin scored a career-high 25 points. He shot 9-of-11 from the floor, including 4-of-4 from 3-point range. Jason Carter added a Xavier career-high 16 points. The Musketeers (10-2) trailed 50-43 early in the second half.
The only game on Thursday’s schedule has Seton Hall hosting Maryland at 7 p.m. ET on FS1. The Terps are ranked seventh in this week’s AP poll and eighth in USA Today. They will be The Hall’s third ranked opponent this season. The Pirates won last year’s meeting 78-74 at College Park behind Myles Cale’s 23 points. For the Pirates tonight, Myles Powell is in concussion protocol and Sandro Mamukelashvili is out with a broken wrist.
