MBB Minute -- Xavier, Seton Hall Gain Sunday Victories to Complete 10-0 Weekend
All 10 BIG EAST teams will enjoy the holidays coming off a victory. Xavier and Seton Hall registered wins on Sunday to complete a 10-0 weekend for the BIG EAST.
Xavier won the final BIG EAST-Big 12 Battle, taking a 67-59 decision at TCU, and Seton Hall beat visiting Prairie View A&M 75-55.
The BIG EAST’s collective record going into the holiday break is 97-25 (.795). Since Thursday, conference teams are 3-0 against AP Top 25 squads.
Overall, the BIG EAST has eight teams with at least nine wins. The teams picked seventh through 10th in the preseason coaches’ poll and by many media outlets – Creighton, Butler, St. John’s and DePaul – are a combined 44-6.
Xavier (11-2) built an early double-digit lead at TCU and led by as many as 22 points in the second half. Tyrique Jones posted his seventh double-double this season with 18 points and 14 rebounds. Guard Quentin Goodin ran the offense efficiently, dishing 11 assists. The Musketeers (11-2) held the Horned Frogs to 32.8 percent shooting from the field.
After a slow start, Seton Hall cranked up its offense against Prairie View A&M. The Pirates (8-4) shot 57.6 percent in the second half and used a 21-2 run to claim the win. Quincy McKnight scored a season-high 25 points and made four steals. Jared Rhoden, Anthony Nelson and Tyrese Samuel each added 12 points.
The schedule does not pick up again until Saturday with four non-conference home contests. FS1 will telecast each game. Georgetown hosts American at noon ET. Marquette meets visiting Central Arkansas at 2 p.m. and Butler plays Louisiana-Monroe at 4 p.m. Creighton hosts Midland at 6 p.m.
The BIG EAST schedule begins on Monday, Dec. 28, with two games on FS1. Xavier plays Villanova at the Finneran Pavilion at 6:30 p.m. followed by Seton Hall at DePaul at 8:30 p.m.
