MBB Minute – DePaul Tops Texas Tech in OT to Stay Undefeated on 5-0 Wednesday
In the first day of competition in the BIG EAST-Big 12 Battle, DePaul continued to be one of the nation’s surprise stories with a 65-60 defeat of Texas Tech in overtime at Wintrust Arena. The Blue Demons improved to 9-0.
BIG EAST teams won all five of their Wednesday contests and have a combined record of 66-18 (.786).
DePaul trailed 50-44 with 3:19 left in regulation, before rallying. Jalen Coleman-Lands forced the extra period with a 3-pointer with 11 seconds remaining. He then scored eight of his team’s 12 points in overtime and finished with 18 points. Paul Reed also scored 18 points and Jaylen Butz added 17 points. Reed and Butz each had seven rebounds.
In the other BIG EAST-Big 12 Battle, Georgetown used a 13-2 run midway in the second half to take control in an 81-74 victory at Oklahoma State. Mac McClung scored a game-high 33 points. Graduate transfer Terrell moved into a starting role at point guard with the departure of James Akinjo and had 15 points.
Villanova pulled away in the final five minutes and defeated Pennsylvania 80-69. Saddiq Bey scored a career-high 27 points and grabbed six rebounds. Jeremiah Robinson-Earl added 13 points and 12 rebounds for his fourth double-double of the season.
Xavier’s Tyrique Jones posted his fifth double-double in an 84-71 win against Green Bay. Jones finished with 14 points and 14 rebounds. Guards Paul Scruggs and Quentin Goodin also had 14 points. Naji Marshall led all scorers with 24 points.
Marquette’s Markus Howard missed the game against Jacksonville due to concussion protocol, but his teammates picked up the slack and recorded a 75-56 victory. Sacar Anim scored a game-high 19 points and Theo John added 11 points and 11 rebounds. The Golden Eagles led 46-23 at halftime.
Thursday is dark on the BIG EAST schedule. Friday has only one game, Providence at Rhode Island at 7 p.m. ET on ESPN2. The Friars have won eight of the last nine battles in the in-state rivalry.
