Villanova swept all five women’s events

Day 2 Results

EAST MEADOW, N.Y. –
The second day of the 2019 BIG EAST Swimming and Diving Championships presented by Jeep saw separation between teams in the overall standings. The Villanova women claimed the top spots in each event Thursday night as they seized a considerable lead with 378 points over second-place Georgetown at 227 points. The Hoyas are currently atop the men’s standings with 263 points, 27.5 points ahead of Villanova with 235.5 points.
 
The day began with the women’s 500 freestyle in which Wildcat Nicole Welch was victorious in a time of 4:49.63. Georgetown’s Cristina Barrett picked up second, clocking in just over a second later at 4:50.85. Andrea Fong of Villanova grabbed the bronze in a time of 4:54.45. On the men’s side, Georgetown’s Brett Sherman out-touched his teammate Michael Wheeler for gold by a tenth of a second. Sherman’s time was 4:23.63, followed by Wheeler’s 4:23.75. Taking third was Seton Hall’s Benjamin LaClair, who registered a 4:28.19.
 
Villanova took a dominant stance in the women’s 200 individual medley by sweeping the first five places. Elise Pidutti came out on top, just under two minutes with an NCAA B-cut time of 1:59.73. Teammates Rayann Jaryszak and Kelly Montesi were separated by just one hundredth of a second for the silver medal, as they touched in 2:00.23 and 2:00.24, respectively. Georgetown’s Drew Carbone repeated as the men’s 200 IM champion, clocking in this year at 1:47.05. In second place was Wildcat Justin Cucchi, who was timed at 1:48.73. Matthew Dyer of Xavier came in at 1:50.45 for the bronze.
 
The shortest event of the championships, the 50 freestyle, saw Villanova’s Taylor Wilson claim the gold medal with a time of 22.87. Xavier’s Emily Conners was the runner up in 23.01, while Wildcat Alexandra Fabbri went 23.22, which was good for third. Seton Hall’s Dakota Williams made it three in a row in the men’s 50 freestyle after he registered a 20.05. Hoya Sean Devlin came in at 20.42 for the silver medal, and Xavier’s Samuel Johanns grabbed the bronze in 20.57.
 
In the women’s 3-meter diving event, another Wildcat, Bridie Dunn took the top honors. She accumulated a score of 525.60, while Georgetown claimed silver and bronze. Naomi Peng scored 507.85 points and Riley Fujioka totaled 505.25 points.
 
Villanova women escaped Xavier in the 200 freestyle relay as they touched the wall by four tenths of a second ahead of the Musketeers. The Wildcats were timed at 1:31.19, while Xavier clocked in at 1:31.85. Seton Hall took home the bronze medal in a time of 1:34.16. Xavier men out-touched Seton Hall by less than a second with a time of 1:21.23. The Pirates came in at 1:21.72. Georgetown picked up third place with a mark of 1:22.35.
 
The third day of competition begins at 10 a.m. ET with preliminary swims for the 400 IM, 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, 100 backstroke and 400 medley relay. Men’s 3-meter diving prelims start approximately at noon, with finals for these events getting underway at 6 p.m.
