Day 3 Results
EAST MEADOW, N.Y. – The Georgetown men maintain a slim lead over Xavier after three days of competition at the 2019 BIG EAST Swimming and Diving Championships presented by Jeep. The Hoyas have amassed 522 points to the Musketeers’ 500.5 points. The Villanova women have increased their lead to 671.5 points over second-place Xavier with 449 points. The Wildcats captured gold medals in each women’s event on Friday.
Villanova’s Kelly Montesi and Elise Pidutti went one, two in the 400 individual medley race, each securing NCAA B-cut times of 4:10.25 and 4:15.99, respectively. Elizabeth Sargent picked up the bronze for Seton Hall with a time of 4:24.54. The Wildcats swept the 400 IM after Justin Cucchi won the men’s race, coming in at 3:52.98. Georgetown’s Brett Sherman was the runner-up in 3:54.06, while third place went to Lior Grubert of Seton Hall in a time of 3:57.64.
The 100 butterfly saw Villanova’s Micaela Grassi take home the gold after out-touching Xavier’s Caroline Gaertner by two one hundredths of a second. Grassi went 54.49, and Gaertner was clocked at 54.51. Musketeer Taylor Hogan grabbed the bronze in 55.31. Pirate Liam Cosgrove captured the men’s 100 butterfly, stopping the clock at 48.41. Villanova’s Stephen Krecsmar was the silver medalist, registering a 48.79, while David Bunnell of Xavier went 49.02 for third.
In the women’s 200 freestyle, Villanova secured the top four spots with Alexandra Fabbri out-swimming teammate Millie Routledge by just five one hundredths of a second for the gold. Fabbri was timed at 1:47.92 and Routledge put up a 1:47.97. Wildcat Taylor Wilson claimed the bronze medal with a time of 1:48.28. For the men, Hoya Jacob Kohlhoff was triumphant with a mark of 1:38.45. Seton Hall’s Benjamin LaClair clocked in at 1:38.88 for second place, and Georgetown’s Michael Wheeler was third in 1:39.09.
Rayann Jaryszak went 1:02.75 to claim the women’s 100 breaststroke title for Villanova. Butler’s Emma Spotts secured the Bulldogs’ first individual medal of the competition with a time of 1:03.99, while Pirate Jordan Decker grabbed bronze in 1:04.42. Xavier's Matthew Dyer was the champion of the men’s 100 breaststroke, recording a time of 54.29. Josh Tosoni of Seton Hall was the silver medalist in a time of 54.95, and Hoya Nathaniel Goldfarb clocked in at 55.06 for third place.
Villanova’s Darby Goodwin made it a career sweep on Friday in the 100 backstroke, winning the event for the fourth straight year. She claimed the gold once again in a time of 54.61. Enlin Chen of Georgetown was the runner-up, coming in at 55.05, and Xavier’s Caroline Gaertner picked up third in 55.30. Hoya Drew Carbone secured his second win of the championships, this time in the 100 backstroke. He touched the wall in a time of 48.27. Musketeer Samuel Johanns was close behind for second place in 48.34, followed by his teammate Nathan Runyon, who grabbed third in 48.46.
Wildcat Michael Perra collected his fourth gold medal in the last two years in the men’s diving events. On Friday he made it a sweep by winning the 3-meter event with 617.70 points. Teammate Michael Ackert secured the silver medal with 564.90 points, and Georgetown’s Griffen Edmonds picked up the bronze with 504.20 points.
In the women’s 400 medley relay, Villanova was once again victorious when the team of Goodwin, Jaryszak, Montesi and Wilson combined for a time of 3:40.92. Xavier was second, coming in at 3:45.34 and Seton Hall claimed third in 3:49.98. Xavier men picked up a big win in the 400 medley relay to close the team scoring margin between Georgetown. Runyon, Dyer, Brandon Abboud and Johanns combined to go 3:14.84 for the gold. The Hoyas were silver medalists in 3:17.14, while the bronze went to Seton Hall in a time of 3:18.51.
The final day of the championships include the 200 backstroke, 100 freestyle, 200 breaststroke, 200 butterfly and 400 freestyle relay. Preliminary swims will begin at 10 a.m. ET with women’s 1-meter prelims starting at noon. The first heats of the timed finals of the 1,650 freestyle will start at 3:30 p.m. Finals for the remaining events are set for 6 p.m. with the senior recognition ceremony scheduled for 5:35 p.m.
