Creighton’s Holton; Xavier’s Zwack Named #BIGEASTbase Players Of the Week
NEW YORK – Creighton junior DH Jake Holton earned BIG EAST Player of the Week honors after a 2-1 weekend in Louisiana against Texas State and McNeese State. Xavier sophomore lefty Nick Zwack was named BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week as he helped the Musketeers to their lone win in a 1-2 weekend at Samford.
St. John’s went 1-1 at Western Carolina. Butler went 0-2 with losses to Rutgers and New Orleans. Georgetown lost three at Campbell. Seton Hall lost at Fairleigh Dickinson and against Dayton. Villanova dropped three at Villanova.
BIG EAST Player of the Week
Jake Holton, Creighton, Jr., DH (Los Gatos, Calif.)
Creighton junior designated hitter Jake Holton closed an impressive weekend in Louisiana batting 6-for-12 (.500) with three home runs, eight RBI and a triple. He scored five runs and finished the 2-1 weekend with a 1.417 slugging percentage, collecting 17 total bases. Jake blasted two home runs in Creighton’s 11-7 comeback win at McNeese State on Saturday night. Creighton split with Texas State, 6-5 in the win, 12-9 in the loss.
BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week
Nick Zwack, Xavier, So., LHP (Monticello, Minn.)
Xavier sophomore starter Nick Zwack picked up the win in Saturday’s 7-1 win at Samford for the Musketeers. Zwack went 5.1 innings with just 85 pitches and finished with a 1.69 ERA. Zwack struck out six and scattered seven hits over the outing. The only run to score came off a solo home run in the sixth inning. He allowed just one walk.
BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll
Bobby Kametas, Creighton, Sr., RHP
Bluejay closer Bobby Kametas collected a win and a save during the weekend, tossing a scoreless ninth for the save on Friday, then hurling 1.2 innings of scoreless relief to grab the win on Saturday evening.
Sean McGeehan, St. John’s, Jr., OF
The junior college transfer Sean McGeehan played the first two games of his St. John’s career in a doubleheader against Western Carolina on Sunday as he went 4-for-6 (.667) with three home runs and four RBI.
Sean Mooney, St. John’s, Jr., RHP
Red Storm hurler Sean Mooney threw five innings of two-run ball to register his first win of the season. Mooney struck out seven, allowed five hits and surrendered a walk as he improved to 20-5 for his career, becoming the 11th SJU pitcher to reach 20 wins.
James Kingsbury, Villanova, So., RHP
Pitched seven strong innings at Virginia in his second start of the year as he allowed just two runs on five hits with six strikeouts. Kingsbury walked three in the no decision result for the sophomore. Villanova lost 7-3.
Matt Warkentin, Xavier, Sr., 1B
Xavier senior Matt Warkentin batted .583 (7-for-12) in a 1-2 weekend for the Musketeers at Samford. Warkentin had two multi-hit games with seven runs, seven RBI, three homers. He also walked twice to post a .667 on-base percentage.
