Lee, Yergler Earn Weekly #BEtennis Accolades
NEW YORK – This week’s BIG EAST Tennis Athletes of the Week honors have been awarded to DePaul’s Maddie Yergler and Xavier’s Michael Lee. Yergler went 3-0 in her matches to help the Blue Demons go 1-1 over the weekend. Lee also went unbeaten in five matches against three teams, guiding the Musketeers to a 2-1 weekend record. This is the first award of the year for both athletes.
BIG EAST Female Athlete of the Week
Maddie Yergler, DePaul, Fr. (Granger, Ind.)
The Blue Demons came away with a split record on the road over the weekend, sweeping Northern Illinois 7-0 and falling in a close match to Indiana 3-4. Yergler teamed up with Aspasia Avgeri at the No. 3 doubles spot to defeat NIU’s Maria Potsi and Fernanda Naves 6-2. She then picked up the victory in the No. 6 singles position over Julia Dmitrieva 6-2, 6-4. Yergler scored another point for DePaul against Indiana when she outdid Somer Henry 6-1, 6-3 on the No. 6 singles court.
BIG EAST Male Athlete of the Week
Michael Lee, Xavier, Jr. (Tucson, Ariz.)
In the Musketeer’s first match of the weekend at No. 44 Louisville, Lee was victorious in his singles match. He defeated Juan Manuel Paredes 6-1, 6-3 at the No. 6 spot. Lee’s winning ways continued with a doubles win alongside teammate Jan Vrba on the No. 3 court. They took down Wright State’s Theo Bourghelle and Javier Alvarez 7-6 (10-6). At No. 6 singles, Lee was triumphant over Bourghelle in three sets 6-3, 4-6, 10-7. Xavier beat WSU 6-1. Lee and Vrba partnered again to win 6-1 this time against NKU’s Felipe Hidalgo and Anthony Bosch at No. 3 doubles. His victory over Hidalgo at No. 6 singles 6-4, 6-1 gave Lee his fifth win of the weekend.
