Collin Gillespie scored a career-high 30 points against Georgetown.
In the new polls released on Monday afternoon, Marquette and Villanova remained 10th and 14th, respectively, in the Associated Press poll. In the USA Today poll, Marquette stayed ninth and Villanova moved up one position to 13th.
Home teams picked two victories on Sunday and lifted the home team record in league play to 27-20. Twenty of the 47 conference games have been decided by six points or less.
On Sunday, Villanova and Georgetown were tied 53-53 with 7:27 to play before the Wildcats put together a 16-2 run and nail down a 77-65 victory at Wells Fargo Center. Sophomore guard Collin Gillespie scored a career-high 30 points for Villanova. Eric Paschall added 24 points and six rebounds. Jermaine Samuels had only three points, but pulled down a career-high 16 rebounds, the highest rebound total in a BIG EAST game this season. James Akinjo led the Hoyas (14-8, 4-5) with 19 points.
Head coach Greg McDermott notched his 200th win at Creighton by guiding his Bluejays past Xavier 76-54 at the CHI Health Center. Martin Krampelj scored a game-high 23 points, grabbed a team-high six rebounds and made a career-high four steals. Xavier was led by Quentin Goodin’s 13 points. The Musketeers (11-12, 3-7) cut a 19-point second half lead to 10, but could not complete the comeback.
Monday is an off night for all 10 league teams. On Tuesday, the lone contest has St. John’s traveling to Marquette for an 8 p.m. ET tipoff on FS1. Marquette is 14-0 this season in the new Fiserv Forum, but St. John’s is the only league team to beat the Golden Eagles, 89-69 on Jan. 1 at Carnesecca Arena.
In that game, St. John’s rode Shamorie Ponds’ 26-point effort to the victory. Marvin Clark II added 22 points. The Johnnies held Markus Howard to eight points. The Golden Eagles were ranked No. 16 in the AP poll at the time.
Howard leads the BIG EAST with a 25.0 scoring average and is first in free throw shooting at 91.1 percent and first in 3-point baskets with 78. Ponds is third in scoring at 20.4 points, first in assists at 5.6 and first in steals at 2.9.
