NEW YORK – Georgetown’s Drew Carbone and Christina Barrett have swept the final BIG EAST Swimming and Diving Athlete of the Week awards of the season. This marks Carbone’s third accolade of the season, while Barrett earns her second. The Hoyas traveled to Seton Hall over the weekend for a BIG EAST tri meet with the Pirates and Providence. Georgetown came out on top on the women’s side, and Seton Hall men were twice victorious overall.
 
Villanova and Xavier also concluded their dual meet seasons this past weekend. Villanova men and women were tested in a defeat to Big Ten Conference member Penn State, while Xavier men and women fell on the road at Mid-American Conference power Miami (Ohio).
 
 
BIG EAST Male Athlete of the Week
Drew Carbone, Georgetown, So., Back/IM (Chelmsford, Mass.)
Carbone captured three individual victories for the Hoyas against Providence and Seton Hall. He was clocked at 50.54 in the 100 yard backstroke for his first win of the competition. Carbone was then the fastest to the wall in the 200 backstroke in a time of 1:50.57. His third victory of the meet came in the 200 individual-medley when he was timed at 1:55.70. He also helped the 200 medley relay to a second place finish, coming in at 1:34.51. Carbone holds the top times in the conference in both the 100 backstroke and 200 IM.
 
BIG EAST Female Athlete of the Week
Cristina Barrett, Georgetown, Jr., Free (Chatham, N.J.)
Barrett guided the Hoyas to wins over Providence and Seton Hall by claiming victories in both of the distance freestyle races. She touched the wall first in the 1,000 freestyle by 10 seconds with a time of 10:25.45, and proceeded to win by over five seconds in the 500 freestyle in 5:05.09. Barrett was also the runner-up in a close 200 butterfly, recording a time of 2:08.55. She holds top-three league times in both the 500 and 1,000 freestyle races.
 
 
Notable Performances
Milly Routledge, Villanova, So., Free/Back (North Ascot, United Kingdom)
Routledge picked up two wins in the Wildcats’ meet versus Penn State. She was victorious in the 100 freestyle, coming in with a time of 51.69. The sophomore also collected a win in the 200 freestyle, posting a time of 1:51.87. Routledge is in the top-three of both events in the BIG EAST.
 
JJ Strain, Villanova, So., Breast/Free (Greenwood Village, Colo.)
Strain garnered the lone event win for the Wildcat men against Penn State. His triumph came in the 100 breaststroke when he clocked in at 58.98. That time is his second-fastest in the race this season.
 
Caroline Gaertner, Xavier, Sr., Back (Mendota Heights, Minn.)
Gaertner was the Musketeers’ only first place finisher in Xavier’s meet at Miami (Ohio). Her victory was in the 100 backstroke as she came in first with a time of 57.31. She was second in the 200 backstroke (2:07.17) and helped the 400 medley relay finish second in 3:53.81.
