DePaul’s Tonejc collects his second award of the season

NEW YORK – DePaul freshman Vito Tonejc is honored as the BIG EAST Tennis Male Athlete of the Week for the second time this year as the newcomer helped the Blue Demons secure a win versus BIG EAST foe, Xavier. St. John’s senior Delia Arranz grabbed her first BIG EAST Tennis Female Athlete of the Week recognition this season, guiding the Red Storm to a couple victories over NJIT and Harvard this past weekend.
 
 
BIG EAST Male Athlete of the Week
Vito Tonejc, DePaul, Fr. (Zagreb, Croatia)
Tonejc went 3-1 in his four matches as DePaul went 1-1 over the weekend. Tonejc grabbed a win at No. 1 singles against Xavier’s Brett Winters, 7-5, 6-4. In his lone loss, Tonejc and his brother Fran fell 6-4 against Musketeers Matthew Graft and Connor LaFavre at the No. 2 doubles spot. The Blue Demons won the match 5-2. Tonejc helped secure the two points DePaul scored versus Marquette in a 5-2 defeat. He partnered again with Fran as the pair took down Golden Eagles Luis Heredia Gomez and Luke Smrek 6-3 in No. 2 doubles, helping to secure the doubles point for the Blue Demons. Tonejc tallied the only singles point for DePaul after he outdid Alvaro Verdu once again on the top court, 7-5, 6-3.
 
BIG EAST Female Athlete of the Week
Delia Arranz, St. John’s, Sr. (Barcelona, Spain)
Arranz went 2-0 in her singles matches this past weekend for the Red Storm. She clinched the match for St. John’s in their first contest against NJIT—a 4-2 triumph. At the No. 5 spot, Arranz defeated Mayar Eltony in three sets, 6-2, 3-6, 6-1. In a tight battle with Harvard, she posted a decisive comeback victory against Irene Lu on the No. 5 court, 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 to tie the match at three points apiece. The Johnnies went on to win the match by a point, 4-3.
