BIG EAST Men's Larosse Update (3/29/19)

NEW YORK
 -- Saturday features a full day of league action for BIG EAST men’s lacrosse. St. John’s hosts Providence, Villanova hosts Marquette and No. 9 Denver hosts No. 19 Georgetown. Marquette already marked a BIG EAST win last Saturday, 9-8 on the road at Georgetown. Denver is looking to preserve a perfect 26-0 league slate.
 
Why We’re Watching:
Providence at St. John’s
Saturday at 1 p.m. ET
St. John’s (4-4) holds a 15-3 all-time record over Providence (4-5). The Friars won last year’s meeting in Providence, 14-8.  All three wins have come in the last three years. St. John’s last win over the Friars came on March 28, 2015, 17-7 in Queens. Providence is coming off a 15-9 loss to Drexel on March 24, while St. John’s is looking to put together a string of three wins after defeating Dartmout 15-8 and UMass Lowell 15-13.
 
Marquette at Villanova
Saturday at 1 p.m. ET
Marquette (5-3, 1-0) comes into Saturday’s game at Villanova (5-4) with one BIG EAST win this season after a 9-8 victory over then-No. 14 Georgetown last weekend. Saturday’s contest against the Wildcats is the 100th in program history for the Golden Eagles. Marquette played its first games in the spring of 2013. Villanova has won the last two games in the series as well as both of the last two games at home. The Wildcats won 10-9 in overtime in 2017 and 9-8 in 2015. Last season, Villanova won 14-9. In 2016,CarMarquette won both meetings en route to the tournament title. Marquette enters Saturday’s contest on a three-game winning streak. Marquette has also won all three of its true road games so far this season. Villanova has won two in a row, including a 10-9 victory at Brown on Monday.
 
No. 19 Georgetown at No. 9 Denver
Saturday at 1:30 p.m. ET
No. 9 Denver (5-3) is the BIG EAST preseason favorite and has not lost a conference game since joining the league. The Pioneers are 26-0 in BIG EAST play. Denver head coach Bill Tierney will be looking for career win No. 400 on Saturday. No. 19 Georgetown (7-2, 0-1) is coming off a one-goal loss at home to Marquette last Saturday. The Hoyas rallied from a seven-goal deficit to pull within one but couldn’t complete the comeback attempt. Denver is also coming off a loss, 14-13 at Princeton on Tuesday. Denver leads the all-time series 6-1. Georgetown earned its first victory over Denver with an 8-3 victory in the 2018 BIG EAST Championship game. Lcas Wittenberg led the Hoyas with three goals and two assists in the title game. Jake Carraway added a hat trick, including the game-winner.
 
Boyce, Jackson Named Senior CLASS Award Finalists
Two BIG EAST student-athletes were named to the Senior CLASS Award Finalist list of 10, Providence goalie Tate Boyce and Denver midfielder Colton Jackson. An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their athletic platforms to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities. The finalists were chosen from the list of 30 candidates, which also included BIG EAST student-athletes from Marquette John Wagner and Noah Richard. Jackson was also an NCAA Elite 90 Award winner in 2017. Jackson is Denver’s fourth Senior CLASS Award Finalist. Boyce is a three-year team captain. He was named BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Year in 2017.
