MBB Minute -- Georgetown Prevails over Seton Hall in Double OT, Villanova Wins
On Senior Night, Georgetown center Jessie Govan had what coach Patrick Ewing called the “best game of his career” in the Hoyas’ 77-71 double-overtime win over Seton Hall. Govan finished with 21 points and 12 rebounds and scored all 11 of Georgetown’s points in the second overtime. Freshman Josh LeBlanc contributed 14 points, 17 rebounds and three steals. Seton Hall’s Myles Powell scored a game-high 35 points. Sandro Mamukelashvili added 14 points and 11 rebounds. The win lifted Georgetown (18-11 overall) into a three-way tied for third place with Xavier and St. John’s at 8-8. The Pirates (16-12) fell to 7-9.
Earlier on Saturday, Villanova used a powerful second half to pull away from Butler and post a 75-54 win at Wells Fargo Center. The Wildcats outscored the Bulldogs 42-24 after halftime. Villanova’s Phil Booth tallied a game-high 28 points and Jermaine Samuels finished with seven points and a game-high 11 rebounds.
Villanova is 22-8 overall and in second place in the BIG EAST at 13-4. Butler, led by Paul Jorgensen’s 11 points, slipped to 15-14 overall and 6-10 in the league.
The Sunday slate includes DePaul hosting St. John’s at noon ET followed by Creighton at 10th-ranked Marquette at 3 p.m. Both games will be on FS1.
The Blue Demons (13-13, 5-10) are trying to end a four-game losing streak. The Johnnies (20-9, 8-8) want to bounce back from an 84-73 setback against Xavier on Thursday. DePaul won the first meeting 79-71 on Jan. 12 on the strength of 27 points from Femi Olujobi.
In the first Marquette-Creighton meeting, the Golden Eagles won 106-104 in overtime on Jan. 9. MU guard Markus Howard set the BIG EAST single-game scoring record with 53 points. The Bluejays (15-13, 6-9) have been off for eight days and have won their last two contests. Marquette (23-5, 12-3) is coming off a 67-61 loss at Villanova on Wednesday.
The BIG EAST remains the only D-I conference that does not have a team with a losing overall record.
Home teams are 46-33 (.582) in league games. Thirty-three of the 79 conference contests (.418) have been decided by six points or less or gone into overtime.
