St. John’s Sweeps #BIGEASTsb Weekly Awards
NEW YORK – St. John’s Marissa Rizzi and Madison Morris have been named the BIG EAST Softball Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively. The Red Storm captured wins over Boston College and Georgia Southern over the weekend at the Madeira Beach Invitational. These awards are the first of the season for both Rizzi and Morris.
DePaul picked up wins against Texas Southern and Houston, while Georgetown beat Harvard and Brown. Villanova was victorious over Presbyterian, Florida A&M and Florida International.
BIG EAST Player of the Week
Marissa Rizzi, St. John’s, Jr., 1B (Manorville, N.Y.)
Rizzi led or tied almost every batting statistical category from the past weekend in the BIG EAST, including batting average (.538), slugging percentage (1.308), on base percentage (.600), hits (7), runs (6), RBI (6) and home runs (3). She scored runs in each game and hit a home run in three of the four games. The junior matched career game highs in hits, RBI and runs with three, three and two, respectively, against Chattanooga. Rizzi leads the league so far this season in slugging percentage (.917) and is second in batting average (.444) and home runs (5).
BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week
Madison Morris, St. John’s, Sr., P (Hampton, Va.)
Morris went 2-1 with an ERA of 2.45 for the Red Storm over the weekend, recording wins over Boston College and Georgia Southern. In 14.2 innings of work she sent down 18 batters, improving her strikeout mark to 52 batters on the season to lead the league. She allowed only one hit and no runs in 4.2 innings of relief against Georgia Southern. Morris held her opponents to a league second-best .173 batting average over the weekend.
BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll
Mae Forshey, Georgetown, Fr., INF/C (Phoenix, Ariz.)
Forshey hit .444 during three games for the Hoyas at home this past weekend. She tallied four hits, recording a double in each game. The freshman also scored two runs and added three RBI in nine total at bats. Forshey had a slugging percentage of .778 and on base percentage of .500.
Paige Rauch, Villanova, So., INF/P (Windsor, N.Y.)
Rauch put in work at the plate and in the circle for the Wildcats at the Madeira Beach Invitational. She compiled a batting average of .467 and an ERA of 1.94. In 15 at bats, she earned three runs, five RBI and tied a league-high seven hits over the weekend. Rauch also connected on two home runs in a win versus Presbyterian. In three starts on the mound, the sophomore went 1-1 allowing just four earned runs and struck out five.
