Ahmeir Kyle secures her second award of the season

NEW YORK – Marquette junior Brett Meyers and Xavier sophomore Ahmeir Kyle have been named BIG EAST Tennis Athletes of the Week. Meyers seized his first recognition of the season, while Kyle has been awarded her second after taking home the honor for the first week of spring play. The Golden Eagles captured victories on the road against Omaha and BIG EAST foe, Creighton. The Musketeers grabbed wins over conference opponents, Providence and DePaul, notching their 15th straight match win.
 
BIG EAST Male Athlete of the Week
Brett Meyers, Marquette, Jr. (Naperville, Ill.)
Meyers went 4-0 during Marquette’s two matches over the weekend. He began with a 7-5 win at No. 1 doubles with Alvaro Verdu over Omaha’s Nathan Reekie and Davis Lawley. At No. 3 singles, Meyers took down Hugo Ballester, 6-1, 6-1. The Golden Eagles won the match 6-1. Against Creighton, Meyers partnered again with Verdu and they knocked off Nick Campbell and Mac Mease at No. 1 doubles, 6-3. He defeated Armando Gandini on the No. 3 singles court, 6-0, 6-3, to clinch the match for Marquette as they won 7-0.
 
BIG EAST Female Athlete of the Week
Ahmeir Kyle, Xavier, So. (St. Joseph, Mich.)
Kyle tallied a 3-0 record as Xavier overwhelmed Providence and DePaul. At No. 1 doubles against Providence, she teamed up with Emily Thomas for the win. They defeated Risa Takenaka and Aidan Epstein 6-1. The Musketeers swept the Friars 7-0. She continued her winning ways with another doubles win at No. 1 alongside Thomas, 6-2, taking down DePaul’s Marija Jovicic and Lenka Antonijevic. Kyle picked up a singles win at No. 1 by taking down Keisha Clousing, 6-2, 7-5. Xavier moved to 17-2 overall this season with the 6-1 win over the Blue Demons.
