Seeding Scenarios

Two of this weekend’s regular-season finales will determine seeding for the 2019 BIG EAST Women’s Lacrosse Championship presented by Jeep. Action gets under way on Friday at 7 p.m. ET when No. 14/14 Denver visits Villanova. The Pioneers can clinch the tournament’s No. 1 seed and the outright regular-season title with a win, after already clinching at least a share of the crown last week. If the Wildcats pull off the upset, VU would clinch a share of the title for the first time, while seeding would be put on hold until the outcome of Saturday’s No. 24 Georgetown-Marquette tilt, set for 3 p.m. ET. Denver enters the weekend in first place at 4-0, eying the 15th flawless finish in BIG EAST history, while the Hoyas and Wildcats are in second at 3-1 (with GU owning the head-to-head tiebreaker) and the Golden Eagles follow in fourth at 2-2. The conference tournament is set for May 2 and 4 at Marquette’s Valley Fields.

Why We’re Watching …
No. 14/14 Denver at Villanova (Friday, 7 p.m. ET): The regular season title for three teams is dependent on this one matchup – the Pioneers can clinch it outright with a win (after already earning at least a share of it last week), while a Villanova victory could cause as much as a three-way tie for the crown between the Wildcats, Denver and Georgetown, should they all finish 4-1, but at the very least a title share between VU and DU. Denver and Villanova have already clinched spots in the BIG EAST Championship field, it just comes down to a matter of matchups. The Wildcats have a notable head-to-head tiebreaker over Marquette, but lost to Georgetown.
24/- Georgetown at Marquette (Saturday, 3 p.m.): The Hoyas remain in contention for a share of the regular-season title, while the Golden Eagles are aiming to get out of their current spot at No. 4 in the standings to avoid a matchup with the No. 1 seed in the conference tournament. A Georgetown win would lock MU into the four-seed, while the Hoyas’ seeding would depend on the outcome of the Villanova-Denver game – sending the Hoyas as high as No. 1 or as low as No. 2. Marquette’s seeding with a win is also directly affected by the VU-DU outcome as MU is the No. 3 with a win and a Villanova win, while the Golden Eagles could finish as high as No. 2 with a win and a Denver win, based on goal differential.
Butler at Old Dominion (Saturday, 11 a.m.): One of these teams is going to score their first ever BIG EAST win and close out the season on a high note. The Monarchs feature one of the most potent scorers in the league in Glory Johnson. Over 16 games this season, Johnson ranks second in the conference with 3.06 goals per game, bumping that stat to 3.25 in BIG EAST play. Ashley Guerra leads the Bulldogs with 43 points off 26 goals and 17 assists this year, notching two game-winning goals as well.
