CALLAWASSIE ISLAND, S.C. – Compiling a team score of even-par 288, Marquette jumped from third place to first after the second round of the BIG EAST Men’s Golf Championship Presented by Jeep at the Callawassie Island Golf Club. The Golden Eagles hold a six-stroke lead over second-place DePaul and an eight-stroke edge over third-place Creighton, the first-round leader.
The third and final round begins Sunday at 8 a.m. ET. The BIG EAST team winner earns an automatic bid to the NCAA Championship. Should the individual champion not be a member of the championship team, he will also earn a spot in the NCAA Championship field as an individual competitor.
On the individual leaderboard, DePaul’s Charlie Spencer-White moved into the top spot with a 3-under-par 69 – the lowest score by any golfer in the first two rounds – to give the senior a two-round score of 142, two under par. In last year’s Championship, Spencer-White finished in a tie for sixth place.
Marquette was in third place after the first round with a team score of 303 (+16) behind Creighton by five strokes and second-place DePaul by two strokes. The Golden Eagles, who are tournament’s top-seeded team, grabbed control of the top spot with its depth. Junior Matt Murlick shot an even-par 72 to be a part of a five-way tie for fifth place at 147 (+3). After Murlick, three Golden Eagles are tied for 11th place at 5-over-par 149. They are seniors Oliver Farrell and Austin Kendziorski along with freshman Tyler Leach.
In addition to Spencer-White’s sparkling play, DePaul’s third-place standing has been aided by the play of Joey McCarthy, who is part of the tie for fifth at 147, after he firing a 73 in the second round.
Creighton, the surprising first-round leader, stayed solid in the second round with a team score of 301. Brad Keyer, who was the leader after the first round with an even-par 72, shot 75 in the second round. Going into the final day, the senior is in the tie for fifth place a 147.
Butler stayed in fourth place with a two-round score of 606. Patrick Allgeier is in third place individually after carding an even-par 72 for a two-round score of 145 (+1). Logan Sabins has been strong, sitting in 10th place with a 148 (+4). He shot 75 in the second round.
Seton Hall sits in fifth place led by senior Chris Yeom, who moved up nine places by firing a two-under par 70. He is in fourth place with a two-over-par 146 after carding a 2-under-par 70 in the second round. Yeom tied for second in last year’s Championship.
Xavier moved up from eighth place to sixth on the strength of a team score of 293 (+5). Imaad Qureshi led the ascent with a one-under-par 71. Garrett Wood carded an even-par 72 and Martin Jaramillo had a two-over-par 74. Wood is tied for fifth place in the standings.
Georgetown, the defending BIG EAST champion, remained seventh. The Hoyas improved their team score in the second round by 12 strokes to 300. The highest ranked Hoya is junior Eduardo Blochtein, who is 18th at 151 (+7).
St. John’s is ninth despite improving its second-round score by 24 strokes to 299. The Red Storm’s leader is Austin Briggs, who shot a two-under par 70 and moved up 13 spaces into a tie for fifth.
Villanova is lodged in ninth place, despite the efforts of Mark Benevento. After a first-round 73, the junior came under par with a 71 in the second round to sit alone in second place with an even-par 144.
