CALLAWASSIE ISLAND, S.C.
– After gaining the lead in the second round, Marquette pulled away on the final day of competition to capture the 2019 BIG EAST Men’s Golf Championship Presented by Jeep at the Callawassie Golf Club.  The Golden Eagles won their third BIG EAST title in the last five years.

As the BIG EAST champion, Marquette earns an automatic bid to the NCAA Championship.  The NCAA Golf Championship selections will be announced on Wednesday.

Individually, Xavier sophomore Garrett Wood won individual honors by firing an even-par 216 in the 54-hole tournament.  He clinched medalist honors by carding a 3-under-par 69 in the final round that included four birdies and an eagle over his final 13 holes.  As the BIG EAST individual he winner, he gained an automatic invitation to the NCAA Championship.

Marquette used its superior depth en route to its victory.  The top four Golden Eagle scorers were among the top 10 finishers and a fifth was tied for 14th.  Junior Matt Murlick finished in a four-way tie for second at 1-over-par 217.  He shot a 2-under-par 70 in the final round.  Senior Oliver Farrell was sixth at 218.  His 69 in the final round matched Wood’s 69 for the lowest round of the day.  Freshman Tyler Leach took seventh place with at 3-over-par 219.  Senior Austin Kendziorski finished in a three-way tie for eighth at 5-over par 221.

“Our depth has been a theme for us all season,” said Marquette head coach Steve Bailey, who also directed the Golden Eagles to championships in 2017 and 2015.  “We’ve had O.J. (Oliver) and Hunter all year long.  And when you have four guys today in the top 10, that’s how you win a championship.  The depth is especially important going into the postseason.”

Marquette finished 24 strokes ahead of runner-up DePaul.  The Blue Demons finished with a team score of 896 (+32).  Senior Charlie Spencer-White, the leader after two rounds, shot a 75 on the final day and was in the four-way tie for second with Murlick.  The others in the tie were Butler junior Patrick Allgeier and Villanova junior Mark Benevento.

Seton Hall and Butler tied for third at 899 (+35).  Creighton took fifth place at 904 (+40) followed by Georgetown (909, +45), Xavier (912, +48), Villanova (924, +60) and St. John’s (933, +69).

The three-way tie for eighth place at 5-over-par 221 included Marquette’s Kendziorski, Seton Hall’s Chris Yeom and DePaul’s Joey McCarthy.

Creighton’s fifth-place finish was 41 strokes better than last year’s ninth-place finish.  The Bluejays’ top performers were senior Koy Potthoff who was 12th at 7-over-par 223 and classmate Brad Keyer, who finished 13th at 225.
