NEW YORK – Providence freshman Daniela Alvarez and St. John’s junior Gretchen Bowie have been selected as this week’s BIG EAST Softball Pitcher and Player of the Week, respectively. Alvarez picks up her third accolade of the season after recording the win in all three games of the series against Butler. Bowie earns her first recognition of the season as the Red Storm went 2-1 versus Villanova over the weekend and clinched the first berth in the BIG EAST Softball Championship presented by Jeep.
 
BIG EAST Player of the Week
Gretchen Bowie, St. John’s, Jr., 3B (Sparta, N.J.)
Bowie helped St. John’s to the series win over Villanova and led the league in RBI (9), runs (5) and slugging percentage (1.444). She went 6-for-9 at the plate for a batting average of .667, which was second-best in the BIG EAST during the weekend. Bowie recorded three extra base hits—a double and two home runs. She also stole two bases, which was tied for the most in the conference. In game three, she went a perfect 3-for-3 at the dish, collected four RBI and scored three runs.
 
BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week
Daniela Alvarez, Providence, Fr., P (Santa Ana, Calif.)
Alvarez started each game in the series against Butler and picked up all three wins. In 16 innings of work, she did not allow a run and allowed just six hits. She finished with a league-best 0.00 ERA and .113 opposing batting average. She tallied 19 strikeouts, which was one shy of the most in the conference over the weekend. Alvarez only allowed two hits in 12 innings in the circle between games one and three.
 
BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll
Kailey Wilson, Creighton, Fr., INF (Aurora, Colo.)
Wilson collected a hit in all three games against second-place DePaul. She batted .455 and went 5-for-11 at the plate. She led the team with five RBI and in slugging percentage (1.091). Wilson hit a double in the first game and followed that with a home run in each of the final two games.
 
London Diller, Georgetown, So., P (Sugar Land, Texas)
Diller tallied the win for the Hoyas, despite giving up four earned runs, in game one versus Seton Hall. In the series finale, she worked 2.2 innings in the circle and did not allow a run. She collected eight strikeouts and finished with a 2.90 ERA over the weekend.
 
Marissa Rizzi, St. John’s, Jr., 1B (Manorville, N.Y.)
Rizzi had a league-high batting average (.700) and on-base percentage (.727). Her slugging percentage of 1.400 was second-best in the BIG EAST during the Red Storm’s series against Villanova. She went 7-for-10 at the plate with five hits picking up extra bases, along with six RBI. She had two doubles in games one and three each, along with a home run in the finale.
 
Hailey Arteaga, Seton Hall, Jr., OF (Upland, Calif.)
Arteaga was tied at the top of the BIG EAST with seven hits and was second in the league with seven RBI. She went 7-for-11 at the dish for a batting average of .636, which was third-best overall. Her slugging percentage (1.364) and on-base percentage (.667) were both third-best in the league. She hit two home runs in the first two games versus Georgetown and connected on two doubles in game three.
 
Paige Rauch, Villanova, So., P/INF (Windsor, N.Y.)
Rauch batted .429 in the Wildcats’ series against conference leader, St. John’s, and got on base in each contest. In the opening game, she went 2-for-2 with a home run. Overall, she had three RBI, scored three runs and drew five walks. She also added eight strikeouts during seven innings in the circle.
