BIG EAST Men's Lacrosse Update (4/5/19)

NEW YORK –
BIG EAST play continues into the second full weekend of the schedule with St. John’s at Marquette, Georgetown at Providence and Villanova at No. 10/13 Denver. CBS Sports Network will air the Wildcats at Pioneers with Darren Goldwater and Steve Panarelli on the call.
 
Denver, Villanova and Providence currently top the standings with 1-0 records. Marquette is in the middle at 1-1, while St. John’s and Georgetown are looking for a win.
 
On Friday, Inside Lacrosse released their Midseason All-America squad. Villanova junior midfielder Connor Kirst represented the league on the Second Team, while Villanova senior short stick middie TJ Comizio and Denver senior defender Dylan Gaines earned third team nods on the watch list. On the Honorable Mention list was Georgetown senior midfielder Lucas Wittenberg, Denver junior short stick midfielder Danny Logan and Georgetown sophomore defender Gibson Smith.
 
Why We’re Watching:
St. John’s at Marquette; Saturday at 1 p.m. ET
St. John’s (4-6, 0-1) is coming off two one-goal losses, 8-7 in overtime to Providence on Saturday, and 12-11 in a heartbreaking fashion to Stony Brook on Tuesday with a chance to tie with seconds remaining. Marquette (5-4, 1-1) has split its BIG EAST games so far this season with a 9-8 road win at Georgetown followed by a 15-11 loss at Villanova. Saturday’s game marks the 101st in the history of Marquette men’s lacrosse, which played its first games in the spring of 2013. MU is 51-49 all-time entering Saturday. Marquette leads the series 5-1. The Golden Eagles lead 2-0 in Milwaukee. Last year, the Red Storm lost to the Golden Eagles 11-10 in overtime. St. John’s led 10-8 with 8:36 left in the fourth quarter before Marquette scored three in a row for the victory, including the game-winner 30 seconds into overtime.
 
Georgetown at Providence; Saturday at 1 p.m. ET
Georgetown is 0-2 in league play, 7-3 overall, while Providence is 1-0 in the BIG EAST, 5-5 overall. The Friars are coming off a 8-7 overtime road win at St. John’s. Georgetown is coming off a 16-9 loss at Denver. The Hoyas opened league play with a 9-8 loss to Marquette.  The Friars have won three of the last four games. Georgetown is 9-2 all-time against Providence, including an 8-4 victory over the Friars on the Hilltop last season.
 
Villanova at No. 10/13 Denver;  Saturday at 5 p.m. ET (CBSSN)
Denver (6-3, 1-0) enters Saturday’s game with a perfect 27-0 BIG EAST regular season record and fresh off the heels of head coach Bill Tierney’s 400th win. Saturday marks the 14th meeting all-time between Denver and Villanova. Villanova’s last win over Denver was in 2001 at Philadelphia. The Wildcats won 9-4.  Last year’s regular season meeting between Villanova and Denver was a top 10 competition with the Pioneers ranked fourth and the Wildcats ranked seventh. The Pioneers won 22-6.  Denver’s Ethan Walker scored eight goals in the win. Denver is coming off a 16-9 win against Georgetown and Villanova (6-4, 1-0) a 15-11 victory over Marquette.
