Creighton’s Holton Earns Fourth #BIGEASTbase Weekly Honor; Seton Hall’s Thompson Named Pitcher Of The Week

Jake Holton, Creighton, Jr., 1B (Los Gatos, Calif.)
Creighton junior Jake Holton opened the weekend series with St. John’s in a decisive manner as he recorded a career-high six RBI in the series-opening 11-0 win over the Red Storm. During Creighton’s series win over St. John’s, Holton hit .500 going 6-for-12 with four extra-base hits. He blasted three doubles and one home run, which was a grand slam to cap the victory on Friday. Holton also drew two walks to post an on-base percentage of .571 and a slugging percentage of 1.000. Holton also crossed the plate three times, earning a hit in all three games. The series win clinched a playoff berth for the Bluejays.
BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week
Noah Thompson, Seton Hall, Jr., RHP (Frisco, Texas)
Seton Hall junior righty Noah Thompson pitched the opening game of a Saturday doubleheader against Georgetown, earning the victory and a series win for the Pirates. Thompson scattered just four hits over six scoreless innings in Seton Hall’s 7-1 victory. He struck out six and waked only two. The win helped secure a spot for Seton Hall in the upcoming BIG EAST Championship field.
BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll
Kyle Smith, Butler, Sr., OF
Smith led a 2-2 Butler with a .500 batting average (7-of-14). Five of his seven hits were doubles. He scored seven runs and didn’t strike out with a .636 on-base percentage and a .857 slugging percentage.
Mitch Ragan, Creighton, Sr., RHP
Ragan outdueled St. John’s ace in a Friday night battle as Creighton’s hurler delivered six shutout innings to set the stage for an 11-0 Bluejay victory. He allowed just four hits and one walk with six strikeouts.
Wyatt Mascarella, St. John’s, Sr., C
Mascarella went 6-for-17 (.353) with two doubles, two home runs and six RBI in a 2-2 week for St. John’s. He logged all of his extra-base hits and RBIs in the final two games of the Red Storm’s series with Creighton. He had a hit in each of the three-game series with the Bluejays, going 6-for-13 (.462).
Tyler Schedler-McAvoy, Seton Hall, Jr., OF
Schedler-McAvoy continued his strong play as he hit safely in all three games in the sweep of Georgetown compiling a .417 average (5-for-12). The junior tallied five runs and four RBI with three doubles, a walk and two stolen bases.
Sam Czabala, Xavier, Sr., LHP
Czabala entered in the sixth inning and pitched 4.0 innings of no-hit baseball as Xavier combined to allow only two hits in the Musketeers 6-1 win over Villanova. Czabala had a career-best six strikeouts, allowing just one base runner, on a walk as he picked up the save.
