NEW YORK – Xavier’s Mikayla Fitzpatrick will compete in the NCAA Women’s Golf National Championship after qualifying as an individual at the NCAA East Lansing Regional last week. The Xavier women’s team, as BIG EAST Champions, finished 14th as a team.
On the men’s side, Marquette enjoyed its best finish in program history with an eighth-place finish at the NCAA Austin Regional. The team score for the BIG EAST champions was 28-over-par 880 (290-29-293). Hunter Eichhorn was the top finisher for the Golden Eagles, tying for 18th place. He improved each round with scores of 73-72 and 71 for a 3-over-par 216. Austin Kendziorski was next for MU with a 4-over-par 217 (72-73-72), which tied for 20th. Oliver Farrell, the BIG EAST Player of the Year, finished in a tie for 32nd at 7-over-par 220 (72-73-75).
Xavier’s Garrett Wood, who qualified for the NCAAs as the BIG EAST individual champion, finished in a tie for 65th at the NCAA Louisville Regional with a 54-hole score of 16-over-par 229 (77-74-78).
Xavier’s Fitzpatrick finished sixth in the NCAA field of 84 golfers in East Lansing, posting a 54-hole score of even-par 216 (72-73-71). She is the first Xavier golfer to advance the NCAA National Championship in program history. Recently named Xavier’s BIG EAST Institutional Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year, Fitzpatrick begins play in the Nationals on May 17 in Fayetteville, Ark. Mikayla Smith was the second-best Musketeer at the Regional, finishing with an 8-over-par 224, which tied for 39th.
