WASHINGTON – Seniors Paula Germino-Watnick and Meaghan Nally of the Georgetown women’s soccer team were named to the 2019 Missouri Athletic Club (MAC) Hermann Trophy Watch List, announced Thursday by the United Soccer Coaches. The pair of Hoyas were two of 61 female student-athletes selected by the organization to make it onto the distinguished list.
The MAC Hermann Trophy is the most prestigious individual award in college soccer and is presented annually to the most outstanding male and female players of the year. The MAC Hermann Trophy Watch Lists are compiled by members of the United Soccer Coaches Men's and Women's NCAA Division I All-America Committees. Fifteen semifinalists will be named for both the men's and women's MAC Hermann Trophy near the end of the college season based on voting by NCAA Division I coaches and from those candidates, three finalists will ultimately be placed on the ballot for the coveted award.
Last season, Nally anchored a Hoya defense that allowed just 10 goals on the season and 199 total shots from GU's opponents in 25 games. The junior tallied nine points on the year from three goals and three assists. She was named the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year as well as a United Soccer Coaches Scholar First Team-All American and All-East Region First Team. This past spring, Nally was called up to the U.S. U-23 Women’s National Team.
Germino-Watnick ranked third on the squad in 2018 with 22 points from eight goals and six assists. The junior took 67 shots on the season and was named to the All-BIG EAST First Team and the United Soccer Coaches All-East Region Second Team. She was also called up to the U.S. U-23 Women’s National Team in the spring.
This is the third time in program history that two Hoyas on the women’s soccer team were named to the MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List. They join 12 other Hoyas in the program who have been named to the watch list in previous seasons. Last year, Arielle Schechtman (B’19) and Caitlin Farrell (C’19) were both named semifinalists and Farrell made it as far as one of the three finalists for the award. Additionally, Georgetown is the only BIG EAST Conference school on both the men’s and women’s lists to have honorees.
The Blue & Gray will kick off the 2019 season on August 22 at James Madison at 7 p.m.
