NEW YORK – BIG EAST teams combined for a 5-3 record on the first official night of the 2019 women’s soccer season. The results included Villanova’s 1-0 upset of 24th-ranked LSU, an impressive comeback by Xavier off the foot of Preseason Offensive Player of the Year Samantha Dewey and a win for Providence over nearby rival and future conference foe Connecticut. The top two teams in the BIG EAST Preseason Coaches’ Poll were also victorious on the road on Monday night as No. 7 Georgetown won at James Madison and RV Butler toppled Morehead State. Creighton opens up action tonight against Kansas State before nine more matches on Sunday, including the season opener for Seton Hall at Loyola (Md.).
 
Villanova 1, #24 LSU 0 
The Wildcats dominated possession during the afternoon match taking 20 shots to LSU's 6 along with 13 corners to one.  It was the shot during the 27th minute by Chloe O'Neill that would be the game winner.  O'Neill broke down the field with two defenders on both sides and a through ball by Brice McInroy found her feet.  From there O'Neill got off a cross shot that would find the back of the net to get the Wildcats on the board. Villanova keeper Hensley Hancuff, who finished with five saves on the day made a big save to shut out the Tigers towards the end of the first half.

#7 Georgetown 2, James Madison 1 
Freshman Julia Leas started it off for the Blue & Gray in the 35th minute by scoring her first career goal from the top of the box. In the second half, graduate student Amanda Carolan made it 2-0 by taking advantage of the JMU defense. With Carolan and senior Paula Germino-Watnick inside the box, Germino-Watnick crossed the ball over to a well-defended Carolan. While JMU's defense miscommunicated during the pass, Carolan snuck past the defender to put the ball in the back of the net in the 54th minute. James Madison was able to get on the scoreboard in the 75th minute on a free kick, making the final score 2-1.

Providence 2, UConn 1 
Hannah McNulty opened the scoring for Providence in the 38th minute. Christina Rodgers played a long ball up the sideline to Kelsie Cummings who beat her defender and crossed it directly to McNulty. Her one-time finish put the Friars up 1-0. Less than five minutes later, the Friars struck again. Rodgers buried a penalty kick after a UConn defender was called for a hand ball in the box. The Huskies cut the Friars' lead to one (2-1) in the 60th minute. Kess Elmore dribbled across the box and took a right-footed shot that beat Shelby Hogan low. Hogan finished with four saves in the win.

Xavier 4, Murray State 3 (2OT)
Samantha Dewey lived up to the preseason billing as BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year, tallying four times against Murray State in a 4-3 double overtime win to start the season. Murray State took the early lead, scoring in the 18th minute, but Dewey answered less than three minutes later to tie the match 1-1 in the 21st minute. Murray State would score twice before the break to take a 3-1 lead into the locker room. Dewey scored again off an assist from Emily Burton to pull the Musketeers to within one less than five minutes out of halftime, then collected the hat trick off an assist from Halle Rogers in the 63rd minute. The draw held through the end of regulation and nearly two full overtimes when Grace Bahr set Dewey up for the golden goal with less than a minute remaining in the second overtime.

RV Butler 3, Morehead State 0
Returning BIG EAST Freshman of the Year, Anja Savich got the Bulldogs started in the 10th minute, chipping in a goal from close range.  Celia Gaynor and Macy Miller assisted on the play. Five minutes later, Gaynor teamed up with Katie Soderstrom to tab her own goal, putting the Bulldogs up by two with 75 minutes left to play. Butler would take six more shots in the next 15 minutes before Savich took advantage of a one-on-one with the Eagle's keeper, after a long lead pass from Soderstrom and help from Amanda Kowalski. Savich's second tally of the night would be the last score of the evening for either team.

Cincinnati 2, St. John's 0 
St. John's played even with the Bearcats for the first 45 minutes of action before Vanessa DiNardo broke a scoreless deadlock in the 52nd minute. Twenty-one seconds later, DiNardo added another tally to give the Bearcats a two-goal lead. The Red Storm and Cincinnati registered eight shots apiece, with the Bearcats holding a 5-2 advantage in shots on goal.Unanimous All-BIG EAST Preseason selection Zsani Kajan recorded four of the team's eight attempts, one of which was on target.

Milwaukee 2, DePaul 1 
The Blue Demons (0-1-0) outnumbered the Panthers (1-0-0) in corner kicks - nine to four - and shots, placing 12 of the 20 on goal, forcing Milwaukee keeper Allie Strottman to make 11 saves. Kristin Boos set a base for her career high with seven shots and three on goal. DePaul stayed strong defensively through the first half. The back line anchored by Avery Hay, Gwen Walker, Jessica Lazo and Sydney parker only allowed one shot within the first 45 minutes. The offense picked up in the second half, but not before Milwaukee would gain a quick 2-0 lead. Haley Johnson would score off a ball from Julia Barajas in the 51st minute and Gaby Schwartz notched a penalty goal in the 60th minute.

Colorado State 2, Marquette 0
Senior goalkeeper Maddy Henry made 10 saves for the Golden Eagles (0-1), marking her highest save total since recording the same amount against then-No. 4 Georgetown on Oct. 18 of last year. Henry played all 90 minutes, as did fellow senior captains Emily Hess and Bri Jaeger on MU's backline. Both goals for the Rams (1-0) were scored by senior midfielder Caeley Lordemann, who led the squad with five last season. Lordemann's first came in the eighth minute and her second came just over eight minutes into the second half at the 53:21 mark.
