NEW YORK – BIG EAST men’s soccer teams went 3-1-0 Monday night with No. 19 St. John’s improving to 6-0-0 with a 5-1 win at Columbia, RV Creighton getting a 2-1 victory over Nebraska-Omaha and Providence defeating Harvard 1-0. RV Villanova lost a tight one to 2018 NCAA national champions Maryland in College Park, 1-0.
The 6-0-0 start for the Red Storm is the best in program history.
Butler (3-1-0) plays at S.I.U.E. on Tuesday night. First kick will be streamed like on ESPN3. The Cougars are 1-2-1 on the season with their lone win coming against Evansville, a team Butler also defeated this season. DePaul’s game at U.I.C. will also be on ESPN+. The Blue Demons are 3-2-0, while the Flames are 4-1-0 this season with their only loss to Ohio State. Tuesday is the 30th all-time meeting between the intercity rivals. The Flames have the advantage, 16-11-3. Marquette (2-1-1) will play the 2019 edition of the Milwaukee Cup on Tuesday night at Milwaukee. The Golden Eagles and Panthers have played every year since 1973. Marquette is coming off a 3-1 victory on Friday night against Northern Illinois, rallying from a one-goal deficit early on. If MU is able to emerge victoriously, it will be the team's first win at Engelmann Stadium since 2008.
No. 11 Xavier (3-1-1) was scheduled to play at I.U.P.U.I. Tuesday night, but the contest was postponed until Tuesday, Sept. 24.

No. 19 ST. JOHN’S 5, Columbia 1
All five goals were scored in the second half as Brandon Knapp scored the team’s first and fifth goals of the night to bookend the victory. It was SJU’s highest scoring output in six years. St. John's last scored five goals in a regular season game on Nov. 8, 2013, against Seton Hall. Niko Petridis and Tiago Teixeira both recorded a goal and an assist in the victory. Petridis' three-point effort marked his second in the span of three games, while Teixeira etched his name on the score sheet for the first time as a member of the Red Storm. Sanoussi Sangary scored the fourth goal.

No. 24 Maryland 1, RV VILLANOVA 0
A rugged defensive struggle of more than 75 minutes turned in Maryland's favor late, as the 2018 NCAA national champions edged Villanova 1-0 Monday night at Ludwig Field. The Terrapins moved their record to 3-2-0 overall, 0-0 Big Ten. The Wildcats are now 4-2 overall, 0-0 BIG EAST. Ben DiRosa scored the winning goal with a tremendous blast from 20 yards out. Redshirt sophomore Carson Williams turned in another sterling effort, making six saves on the night. Earlier in the day the Plano, Texas native was named BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Week.

PROVIDENCE 1, Harvard 0
Tiago Mendonca scored the game-winning goal in the 21st minute as Providence moved to 4-2-0 on the season. Goalkeeper Austin Aviza made three saves en route to the shutout. Mendonca’s goal was his first of the season. Providence led 13-3 in shots in the first half. The Friars ended up outshooting Harvard 27-5. Providence also held an 8-3 advantage in corner kicks. Harvard fell to 0-4-0.

RV CREIGHTON 2, Nebraska-Omaha 1
A goal during the 88th minute from Luke Haakenson lifted the Creighton men's soccer team to a 2-1 win over Nebraska-Omaha on Monday night at Morrison Stadium. The Bluejays improved to 3-2-1 on the year, while the Mavericks fell to 0-4-2 overall. Nebraska-Omaha opened the scoring in the 26th minute. The Mavericks' Marcos Bautista sent a free kick across the box to the back post where Seth Rinderknecht headed the ball past the end line to give UNO a 1-0 lead. Creighton evened the score during the 38th minute. A corner kick from sophomore Charles Auguste struck multiple players in the box before the ball found its way to senior Tor Trosten who blasted a shot past Maverick goalkeeper Jeremy Pollard for the Bluejays' first goal of the match.
