Providence’s Wheeler, Rosas Take Weekly Cross Country Honors

NEW YORK – Providence’s Abbey Wheeler and David Rosas have been chosen BIG EAST Male and Female Athletes of the Week in Cross Country based on their performances at the Coast-to-Coast Battle in Beantown at Franklin Park in Boston, Mass.    
 
BIG EAST Male Athlete of the Week
David Rosas, Providence, Jr. – Rosas led the Friars with a 24th-place finish at the Coast-to-Coast Battle in Beantown.  The junior recorded a time of 24:53 in the 8K race and he improved eight spots since last season at same meet.  The field included No. 3 Washington, No. 13 Syracuse and No. 21 Arkansas.  As a team, Providence finished 12th.
 
BIG EAST Female Athlete of the Week
Abbey Wheeler, Providence, Sr. – For the second year in a row, Wheeler won the Coast-to-Coast Battle in Beantown.  She recorded a personal-best Franklin Park time of 17:03, which improved on her winning time last year by 6.7 seconds.  Wheeler beat rivals from nationally ranked Dartmouth, Syracuse and Georgia Tech.  She outkicked Syracuse’s Amanda Vestri in the final 200M.  The Friars finished eighth in a 22-team field.
 
BIG EAST Notes
Men’s News – Freshman Jack Larsen of Creighton placed 41st at the National Catholic Invitational with a time of 27:18.56.  It was Larsen’s first collegiate race.  The Bluejays took eighth place in a 21-team field.
 
Women’s News Villanova sophomore Lydia Olivere won the Main Line Invitational with a time of 16:22.1 over the three-mile course.  She won the event by 10 seconds and posted the seventh fastest time by a Wildcat on the Haverford course.  Villanova had eight of the first nine runners across the finish line.  Creighton sophomore Danielle Hotaling finished eighth among Division I runners at the National Catholic Invitational at Notre Dame.  She ran the 5K race in 18:16.64.  Her time was a 21-second improvement over last year when she finished 25th.  The Bluejay women placed fifth in the team standings…St. John’s finished 11th at the Brother John “Paddy” Doyle Meet of Champions.  Katie Bruno, an NJCAA All-American, led the team with a time of 19:40.3 in her first race at St. John’s. 
 
BIG EAST Presence In the USTFCCCA Polls
In the USTFCCCA national polls of Sept. 24, the women’s poll shows Villanova moving up to No. 28 with Georgetown receiving votes.  In the men’s poll, Villanova is No. 29.
