NEW YORK – BIG EAST teams went 7-1-0 on Tuesday night with two double overtime contests, six one-goal games and four winning shutouts. Butler highlighted the evening with a 2-1 victory over in-state rival and fifth ranked Indiana at home. Villanova, Xavier, Seton Hall, Creighton, DePaul and Marquette each earned victories. No. 2 Georgetown suffered its first loss of the season on a golden goal situation in double overtime at No. 17 Louisville.
 
On Wednesday, Providence will host Brown at 7 p.m. League play continues on Friday with Marquette at Xavier. On Saturday, Providence will travel to No. 2 Georgetown, DePaul to Seton Hall, No. 9 St. John’s to Butler and Villanova to Creighton.
 
After Georgetown’s loss last night to Louisville, and St. John’s loss at Maryland on Monday, also in double overtime, only eight teams remain unbeaten in Division1: Cal State Fullerton (7-0), Clemson (8-0), Saint Mary’s (7-0), SMU (7-0), Missouri State (6-0), Stanford (7-0), Navy (8-0) and Virginia (7-0).
 
National Rankings
Georgetown moved up to No. 2 in the United Soccer Coaches poll on Tuesday, receiving three first-place votes. St. John’s stayed steady at No. 9, marking the second week in a row the BIG EAST had two teams in the top 10. Xavier and Creighton received votes. The poll was voted on and submitted prior to any results from this week.
 
Against Teams In The USC Rankings
BIG EAST teams are 3-4-2 (.444) against the United Soccer Coaches Top 25. The biggest wins of the season have been Xavier’s 2-0 win over then-No. 3 Akron on Aug. 30 and Tuesday’s 2-1 win for Butler over No. 5 Indiana. The Hoosiers were receiving one first place vote in this week’s poll. Creighton tied No. 6 North Carolina on the road, 2-2 on Aug. 30 and Xavier tied then-No. 17 Kentucky on Sept. 11.
 
Big Games Bring Big Crowds
4,312 fans at the Sellick Bowl witnessed Butler’s win over in-state rival, No. 5 Indiana on Tuesday night, the biggest Bulldog crowd this season. Prior to Tuesday’s game, Butler had averaged 660 Bulldog fans at the Bowl. Creighton leads the country in accumulated attendance (13,976) and ranks fourth in average attendance with 2,795 fans regularly visiting Morrison Stadium. More than 3,000 fans have packed Fortress Morrison on three occasions this season with a high of 4,818 on Sept. 6, Creighton’s 2-1 win over then-No.21 Akron during  the annual Creighton Socctoberfest promotion. 3,158 Bluejay fans packed the house on Sept. 13 for the Creighton game against UC Irvine and 4,096 fans came for the cross-town rivalry game against Omaha on Sept. 16. For the anticipated top 25 clash between No. 9 St. John’s and then-No. 19 Xavier on Sept. 20, 1,653 fans watched at Belson Stadium in Queens as the Red Storm won 3-1. Georgetown’s season-opener against Syracuse brought 1,121 fans. After Creighton, Butler ranks 19th in average attendance.
 
Last Night in #BEfútbol
VILLANOVA 1, George Washington 0
An Evan Vare goal scored in the 71st minute proved decisive Tuesday as Villanova downed George Washington 1-0 in non-conference match played on a delightful afternoon at the Higgins Soccer Complex. The clean sheet was Villanova's sixth in eight outings this season and upped their record to 5-2-1 overall, 0-0-1 BIG EAST. The Wildcats are 4-0 on West Campus and have yet to surrender on goal on their home pitch. At the end of the day, the Wildcats owned an 18-9 edge in shots after a strong second half. Goalkeeper Carson Williams was ready when needed, making two saves as he registered yet another shutout on the ledger. Full Recap
 
XAVIER 1, IUPUI 0
Freshman Karsen Henderlong scored the lone goal of the match at the 1:28 mark in the first half, finding the back of the net off a pass from Grant Dumler. It was Henderlong’s fifth goal of the season as he currently ranks tied for first on the team in goals with senior Samson Sergi. Redshirt-junior Matthew Rosenberg (4-2-1) posted his third shutout of the season, increasing his career total to 10. The Xavier defense did not allow a shot on goal in the match. Full Recap
 
SETON HALL 4, NJIT 1
Seton Hall junior Camil Koreichi scored a pair of goals, and graduate student Sean Macleod put in the game-winner as the Seton Hall men's soccer team had an outstanding offensive performance in a 4-1 victory over NJIT Tuesday night at Lubetkin Field at Mal Simon Stadium. Koreichi's brace and Macleod's goal were firsts for both with the Pirates. Freshman Andrea Borg scored the team's fourth of goal of the night, his second of the season.  The game was tied a 1-1 through the 40th minute when Macleod broke the tie. Seton Hall had the slight edge in shots, 19-16, while shots on goal were even at 8-8. Full Recap
 
CREIGHTON 4, Tulsa 3 (2OT)
Senior Yudai Tashiro delivered a golden goal midway through the second overtime to help the Creighton men's soccer team defeat Tulsa 4-3 on Tuesday night at Morrison Stadium. The Bluejays improved to 5-2-1 on the season, while the Golden Hurricane fell to 3-4-0. Tashiro found the back of the net for the game winner immediately following an indirect free kick during the 106th minute. Tulsa played a back pass to its goalkeeper who touched the ball with his hands to induce an indirect free kick for Creighton from the top of the six-yard box. Kuba Polat tapped the free kick to Tashiro who blasted the ball into the top of the goal to lift the Bluejays to the victory. Luke Haakenson had two goals in the win, the first multi-goal match of his career. Full Recap
 
BUTLER 2, Indiana 1
Butler took advantage of nearly every opportunity it had Tuesday night in knocking off No. 5 Indiana, 2-1, at the Sellick Bowl in Indianapolis. A raucous crowd of 4,312 witnessed the Bulldogs' victory, as the home team improved to 4-3 on the season. Tuesday night marked the first loss of the season for the Hoosiers (4-1-2). Butler keeper Gabriel Gjergji was stellar in goal throughout the night. His diving save on Victor Bezerra's penalty kick in the 17th minute provided a momentum swing that the Bulldogs sorely needed. Gjergji made five saves in the contest, four in the first half. Indiana had an 18-5 advantage in shots and a 9-0 edge in corner kicks. This was Butler's fifth win over Indiana in the all-time series. The Bulldogs are 4-5-3 against Indiana since 2009 (and 5-23-4 against the Hoosiers all-time). Full Recap
 
No. 17 Louisville 1, No. 2 GEORGETOWN 0 (2OT)
The No. 2 Georgetown University men's soccer team battled down to the wire, but a late goal from the University of Louisville Cardinals in the 106th minute would be the difference in a tough 1-0 loss Tuesday evening at the Dr. Mark and Cindy Lynn Stadium.  The loss is GU's first of the 2019 season as the Hoyas dropped to 6-1 overall and Louisville improved to 4-1-2. The game winner came off of a corner kick as the first ball was headed away but the second was sent back into the box and into the net to give the Cardinals the golden goal. Georgetown goalie Giannis Nikopolidis had four saves in net. Prior to the goal, the Hoyas had gone 239 minutes without allowing a goal. Full Recap
 
DEPAUL 1, Oakland 0
In what looked like a game headed into overtime, DePaul managed to find a way to take down the Oakland Golden Grizzlies 1-0 on Tuesday evening at the Oakland Soccer Park. The Blue Demons improve to 4-3-1 on the season. Oakland (4-3-1) heavily outshot DePaul, 21-6, but only forced DePaul goalkeeper Drew Nuelle to make four saves, earning his fourth shutout this season. The lone goal of the match came in the 87th minute when DePaul earned their fifth corner of the game. Zach El-Shafei placed the ball perfectly in line for Youssef Ramadan to head the ball straight into the back corner of the goal. Full Recap
 
MARQUETTE 2, Wisconsin 0
Marquette (3-3-1) defeated the University of Wisconsin 2-0 on Tuesday night at the McClimon Soccer Complex. MU went scored its first goal of the game in the 37th minute off a pass from Patrick Seagrist on the left wing to a streaking Christian Marquez, who volleyed the pass off one touch into the right corner of the net. The goal was the first of his career for Marquez, a freshman from Berwyn, Illinois. The first half saw the Golden Eagles outshoot the Badgers by an 8-1 margin as they controlled the pace of play for the first 45 minutes. Luka Prpa, who made his first start of the season on Tuesday night, played a season-high 58 minutes, notching two shots on the evening. Redshirt freshman keeper Jackson Weyman saved two shots and earned his second clean sheet of the season. Full Recap
