NEW YORK – No. 10 Marquette and Xavier earned the first league wins of the 2019 season on Wednesday as the Golden Eagles won in straight sets over Butler and the Musketeers took down DePaul in a five-set match on the road.
League play continues on Friday with four matches, eight of the 10 teams playing, while Xavier and Butler have a bye.
Marquette 3, Butler 0 (25-22, 25-17, 25-15)
Tenth ranked Marquette defeated Butler at the Al McGuire Center as Golden Eagle senior Allie Barber produced a recorded 13 kills to lead MU (11-2, 1-0). Freshman Hannah Vanden Berg added seven kills with just one error to hit at a .400 clip, while senior Gwyn Jones hit at a .857 mark for six kills to go along with two blocks. Defensively libero Hope Werch and Martha Konovodoff collected 13 and 12 digs, respectively. Butler (3-10, 0-1) was led by Brooke Gregory and Shanice Horn with six kills apiece.

Xavier 3, DePaul 2 (25-23, 22-25, 20-25, 25-23, 16-14)
Xavier (4-7, 1-0) clinched a five-set win over DePaul (8-5, 0-1) last night behind a balanced attack and stellar performance at the net defensively. The Musketeers had four in double-digit kills led by Norah Painter’s 15 kills, while Lauren Hanlon and Moriah Hopkins chipped in 13 kills apiece and MaryAnn O’Toole piled on 12 more. On the defensive end, Xavier’s 14 total blocks and Madi Kutruff’s 25 digs powered the Musketeers to a come-back victory. DePaul was led by 24 kills from senior Brittany Maxwell, while Emma Price added 15 to pace the Blue Demons. Isabelle Banez, three-time BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week, led the Blue Demons defensively with a career-high 37 digs.
