MBB Minute – Seton Hall Wins at Butler; Three Home Teams Nail Down Victories
For the first time in BIG EAST history, Seton Hall is 5-0 in league play after a 48-point second half helped propel the Pirates to a 78-70 win at Butler on Wednesday. The Hall, ranked 18th in both major polls this week, also extended its winning streak to seven games. Myles Powell scored a game-high 29 points and Romaro Gill added 17 points, four rebounds and four blocked shots. The Bulldogs (15-2), ranked fifth in the polls, were led by Kamar Baldwin’s 19 points and six assists. Jordan Tucker contributed 14 points and 10 rebounds.
Georgetown (12-6) placed five players in double figures, led by Omer Yurtseven, in an 83-80 win against Creighton. Yurtseven produced his ninth double-double with 20 points and 13 rebounds. Mac McClung added 19 points, five rebounds and five assists. The Bluejays (13-5), who are ranked 25th this week by AP, got 20 points from Marcus Zegarowski and 19 from Denzel Mahoney. Ty-Shon Alexander, who finished with 14 points, went over the 1,000-point plateau for his career. The game result left both teams with 2-3 BIG EAST records.
Marquette’s Markus Howard was the night’s high scorer with 35 points in an 85-65 home win against Xavier. He recorded his seventh 30-point game this season and the 24th of his career. The senior pushed his BIG EAST career scoring total to 1,218 points, 11th on the league’s all-time scoring list. The Golden Eagles (12-5, 2-3) enjoyed a 46-30 rebounding edge. The Musketeers (12-6, 1-4) were led by Tyrique Jones’ 16 points.
Providence improved to 4-1 in BIG EAST play after holding off St. John’s 63-58. Alpha Diallo was the only Friar in double figures, scoring 19 points. PC (11-7) had a 46-34 edge on the boards. The Friars’ 4-1 league start is their best since the 2003-04 squad began 5-1. St. John’s (12-6, 1-4) had balanced scoring with four players in double figures. L.J. Figueroa posted team highs of 12 points, nine rebounds and five steals.
BIG EAST play resumes on Saturday with nine of 10 teams in action. Villanova steps outside of conference play with a game against Connecticut on FS1 at noon ET.
Home teams are 15-9 (.625) in league games going into Saturday.
