MBB Minute – In a 3-1 Monday for BIG EAST teams, Seton Hall won a contest between coach and mentor, St. John’s and Xavier prevailed in games in the 90s that included harrowing finishes and Providence got off to a bad start in the Maui Invitational.
In a game that wasn’t scheduled until Saturday, Seton Hall defeated Iona 86-64 at the Prudential Center. Pirate coach Kevin Willard was going against his mentor, Iona coach Rick Pitino. The Hall used a 19-2 run midway in the second half to pull away for the win. Forward Jared Rhoden scored a career-high 26 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Sandro Mamukelashvili contributed 18 points and seven rebounds.
St. John’s led Boston College by 20 points in the second half, but held on for a 97-93 win at Mohegan Sun Arena. In his first game of the season, Julian Champagnie scored a career-high 29 points and pulled down 10 rebounds. Posh Alexander added 18 points and five assists. St. John’s is 7-0 against former members of the BIG EAST.
Xavier had a 12-point edge in the second half against Eastern Kentucky, before being pushed into overtime. Newcomer Nate Johnson hit a 3-pointer with 1:48 left in the extra period to put the 4-0 Musketeers ahead for good. Xavier got double-double performances from Zach Freemantle (24 pts., 13 rebs.) and Jason Carter (20 pts., 11 rebs.).
Providence started slowly against Indiana in the first round of the Maui Invitational and dropped a 79-58 decision. David Duke and Nate Watson each had 12 points for the Friars.
Tuesday’s schedule shows five games. At 5 p.m. ET, Creighton hosts Nebraska-Omaha on FS1. At the same time on ESPN2, Villanova plays its final game at Mohegan Sun, meeting Hartford. Georgetown plays its second game of the season, hosting Navy at 6 p.m. on CBS Sports Network. Marquette hosts Oklahoma State in the Big 12-BIG EAST Battle at 7 p.m. on FS1. In the second round of the Maui Invitational, Providence and Davidson will meet for the first time ever at 7 p.m. on ESPN2.
The BIG EAST’s overall conference record is 17-3 going into Tuesday.
