Freshman Justin Lewis tipped in a missed free throw as time expired to lift Marquette to a 67-65 victory over in-state rival and fourth-ranked Wisconsin Friday night at Fiserv Forum.
Lewis, who finished with a game-high 18 points, made the winning play after D.J. Carton had made the first of two free throws that tied the game 65-65 with .9 seconds remaining. Carton, who made his first start in a Marquette uniform, finished with 12 points.
For the second straight game, Creighton placed six players in double figures en route to a comfortable victory. The Bluejays (3-0) defeated visiting Kennesaw State 93-58. Marcus Zegarowski and freshman center Ryan Kalkbrenner each scored 14 points. Creighton led 52-25 by halftime and committed only seven turnovers for the game. A couple of hours after the Creighton win at the CHI Health Center, Seton Hall took the floor to battle No. 21 Oregon. The Pirates played from behind after the first minute and absorbed an 83-70 defeat. Shavar Reynolds scored a career-high 17 points and dished eight assists. Myles Cale and Tyrese Samuel each added 11 points. Sandro Mamukelashvili was limited to only seven shots and finished with 10 points and six boards.
The BIG EAST’s overall record is 25-9 (.735) going into Saturday’s schedule, which was pared to one game after the Connecticut-NC State game was canceled late Friday night due to a positive COVID test within the Wolfpack program.
Providence hosts Fairleigh Dickinson at 4:30 p.m. ET on FS2 in the remaining contest. The Friars (2-2) are playing their fourth game in six days. David Duke was named to the Maui Invitational All-Tournament Team after averaging 14.7 points, 3.7 rebounds and 3.0 assists in three games earlier this week.
