Opening Weekend Round-Up
Five of six BIG EAST women’s lacrosse teams lifted the lid on their 2020 campaigns this weekend, combining for a 3-2 record. The BIG EAST’s ranked squads – No. 19/19 Georgetown and No. 10/10 Denver – picked up home wins to open the season, as did 2019 BIG EAST Championship qualifier Villanova. The Wildcats’ Katie Comerford had the single-game high in points last week, tallying seven (4g, 3a) in Saturday’s win over William & Mary, while the Pioneers’ Quintin Hoch-Bullen picked up where she left off last season with a weekly high of five goals in the win over No. 20/RV Stanford. Just one midweek game is on the docket before Weekend No. 2 gets underway as Old Dominion hosts VCU Wednesday at 3 p.m. ET.
Villanova 16, William & Mary 12
Three Villanova players notched hat tricks, including four goals and three assist for Katie Comerford, as VU picked up a road win over William & Mary Saturday to open the year. Wildcat goalkeeper Alexa Moro had a successful opening to her sophomore season, making four saves in each half to finish with eight stops. Villanova outshot William & Mary 40-23 on the afternoon. The Wildcats finished the day with 32 shots on goal, 23 ground balls and 18 draw controls.

19/19 Georgetown 19, Saint Joseph’s 5
No. 19/19 Georgetown used a huge first-half effort to defeat Saint Joseph's Saturday afternoon in both teams' season opener at Cooper Field. The Blue & Gray scored 15 first-half goals to take a commanding lead and never looked back. Michaela Bruno led the Hoyas with four goals while Natalia Lynch managed three and an assist along with nine draw controls. Micheline DiNardo made two stops in the cage to pick up the win. Wynne Whitley was credited with four of Georgetown’s 16 caused turnovers on the afternoon.

10/10 Denver 17, 20/RV Stanford 13
Quintin Hoch-Bullen led the Pioneers on Saturday in Colorado against the Cardinal with five goals while Hannah Liddy and Bea Behrins each added hat tricks. Liddy also added a team-high three assists on the afternoon. Carson Gregg spent all 60 minutes in goal for the Pioneers, recording 14 saves and allowing 13 goals. Denver jumped out to an early 4-1 lead and closed the first half with a 6-1 run for a 12-5 lead after the opening 30. The Pioneers kept their foot on the gas, scoring three of the first four of the second period to lead the 20
th-ranked Cardinal by as many as nine.

Coastal Carolina 12, Old Dominion 8
ODU played a quality second half, outscoring Coastal Carolina 5-4 and holding a 13-10 shot advantage while successfully clearing the ball 6-of-7 times in the final 30 minutes of action, but the Monarchs couldn't come back after CCU’s strong first-half performance in which they led 8-3. ODU suffered from penalty troubles throughout the match, as the Monarchs were given six yellow cards and allowed CCU to score four goals with the extra-player advantage. Glory Johnson finished with a game-high five points (3g, 2a) along with 10 draw controls.

7/7 Notre Dame 18, Marquette 3
No. 7/7 Notre Dame scored the first seven goals of the game before Garcia netted MU's first of the season with 12:13 left in the first half. Marquette (0-1, 0-0 BIG EAST) was led offensively by attackers Caroline Steller and Shea Garcia. Steller finished with a goal and an assist while Garcia scored two goals, including MU's first of the season. Senior goalie Jules Horning, who's in year four as a starter at MU, made six saves in 44 minutes while junior Sophia Leva added in five saves and two ground balls in 16 minutes of action.
