MBB Minute -- Providence, Georgetown Beat Ranked Foes; Creighton Gets 20th Win
A three-game Saturday featured Providence and Georgetown taking down ranked league opponents and Creighton becoming the first BIG EAST team to get 20 wins.
On a wild Saturday night at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center, Providence treated its sellout crowd to 34-9 start against first-place and No. 10 ranked Seton Hall. The Pirates recovered to reduce the big deficit to two points with eight minutes to go before the Friars (14-12, 7-6 BIG EAST) prevailed 74-71. PC coach Ed Cooley said Alpha Diallo had his best career game at the Dunk. The senior scored 35 points and pulled down 10 rebounds while shooting 11-of-15 from the field and 5-of-5 from 3-point range. Seton Hall (16-7, 10-3) was led by Myles Powell’s 27 points.
Georgetown went into its game at Butler without its top two scorers, Mac McClung and Omer Yurtseven, who were out with injuries. After leading most of the game, the Hoyas (15-10, 5-7) used a late 10-0 run to seal a 73-66 victory over the 19th-ranked Bulldogs (19-7, 7-6). Terrell Allen tied his career scoring high with 22 points. Allen, Jahvon Blair and Jagan Mosely all played 40 minutes. Kamar Baldwin led Butler with 17 points. The Hoyas are 6-1 at Hinkle Fieldhouse in the current 10-team alignment.
Creighton has 20 wins for the 20th time in the last 22 seasons after a 93-64 victory against visiting DePaul. Ty-Shon Alexander tied a season high with 24 points. He had eight assists with only one turnover. The Bluejays, who led 42-28 at halftime, made 13-of-26 from 3-point range. Creighton (20-6, 9-4) is a game behind first-place Seton Hall. Charlie Moore led DePaul (13-12, 1-11) with 20 points and five assists.
On Sunday, the BIG EAST non-conference schedule concludes when Villanova plays at Temple for a 1 p.m. ET tipoff on ESPN. Temple is also Villanova’s final Philadelphia Big 5 opponent for the year. The Wildcats (18-6) have taken the last six meetings against the Owls and are 3-0 in Big 5 play this season.
