#BIGEASTwlax Minute: Weekend Review

Weekend Recap
BIG EAST teams combined for a 4-2 weekend mark, with No. 10/9 Denver, Butler, Marquette and Old Dominion picking up wins. The Pioneers remain the lone unbeaten team in the league, showing a 2-0 mark heading into the third week of play. Three games are on the docket this week before another weekend full of action, including Marquette at Louisville today at 2 p.m. ET. Old Dominion visits William & Mary on Wednesday, while Butler hosts Detroit Mercy on Thursday to wrap up midweek play.
 
Butler 22, Hanover 0 
Last year’s scoring leader Ashley Guerra netted what would ultimately be the game-winning goal at 28:38 in the first half in Butler’s season opener. The Bulldogs went on to score 14 more goals in the first period, followed by seven in the second half. Sixteen different Bulldogs scored in the match and two, Lindsey Schreiber and Gabryelle Bodine, recorded hat tricks. The Bulldogs held the Panthers to just three shots, none of which were on goal. Butler also had a hand in 11 of Hanover's 18 turnovers.

Cornell 13, Villanova 11 
Villanova held a 7-6 lead at halftime but the host Big Red outscored the Wildcats (1-1) 7-4 over the final 30 minutes to come from behind and deal VU its first loss of the season. Villanova had the advantage for both shots (29) and shots on goal (22). Sophomore goalkeeper Alexa Moro made seven saves in the game. Katie Comerford scored a game-high four goals while Sydney Frank was credited with three caused turnovers.

Old Dominion 17, Winthrop 15 
After trailing by three goals midway through the second half, Old Dominion (2-1) scored six of the game's final seven goals to earn a 17-15 victory over Winthrop on Saturday afternoon. Glory Johnson led the Monarchs with nine points, scoring five goals and assisting on four others. Lilly Siskind and Claire Porter each had three goals, joining Johnson as the three Monarchs with hat tricks on the day. In goal, freshman Sabrina Leatherwood earned the win with her 11-save effort in the contest.

12/16 Penn 17, 19/20 Georgetown 6 
No. 19/20 Georgetown staged a second-half comeback but it wasn't enough as the Blue & Gray fell 17-6 to the No. 12/16 University of Pennsylvania Quakers Saturday afternoon at Cooper Field.  Trailing 9-1 midway through the second half, GU went on a 5-0 run to get within three, 9-6, but the Quakers responded with an 8-0 run to close the game. Natalia Lynch had two goals, four draws and four caused turnovers for the Hoyas, who fall to 1-1 on the year.

10/9 Denver 15, Louisville 6 
A Bea Behrins sock trick led the Pioneers offense as the junior scored four goals in the opening 30 minutes of play before adding two in the back half of the contest. Behrins put 11 of her 13 shots on target to pair with one assist. Coming off a five-goal performance last weekend, Hoch-Bullen netted a hat trick while Hannah Liddy notched a team-high six assists. Defensively, Sam Thacker led the Crimson and Gold (2-0) with three caused turnovers while Kailee Lammers notched a team-high and career-high five ground balls. Carson Gregg spent all 60 minutes in goal recording five saves in the contest while holding the Cardinals to just six goals.

Marquette 17, Cincinnati 6 
Eight different players scored Friday for Marquette in a decisive 17-6 victory over Cincinnati at Valley Fields. Senior captain Megan Menzuber led the way with a career-high six goals, tying the school record for most goals in a game. Shea Garcia had a hat trick for MU while Madison Kane and Caroline Steller had two goals each in an explosive offensive performance. Jules Horning had four saves in just over 40 minutes of action in the cage.
