Marquette improved to 8-7 in BIG EAST play after Wednesday's win against Georgetown.
MBB Minute -- Marquette, Villanova Pick Up Wednesday Wins
In Wednesday action, Marquette ended its losing skid at three games while Villanova extended its winning streak to five.
Marquette defeated visiting Georgetown 93-72, which improved the Golden Eagles’ record to 18-9 overall and 8-7 in the BIG EAST. Markus Howard led all scorers with 30 points and he dished seven assists. Sacar Anim contributed 15 points, five rebounds and four assists. It was Howard’s 12th 30-point game this season. He moved into 28th place on the NCAA’s all-time scoring list with 2,663 points. Jagan Mosely led Georgetown (15-13, 5-10 BIG EAST) with a season-high 19 points. Jahvon Blair added 18 points. The Hoyas again were without injured starters Mac McClung and Omer Yurtseven.
Villanova moved into a tie for second place with a 71-60 victory over St. John’s at Finneran Pavilion. Saddiq Bey scored a game-high 23 points and Justin Moore added 21 points. Bey and Moore combined for shoot 60 percent from the field (15-of-25) and 3-point range (9-of-15). The Wildcats are 22-6 overall and 11-4 in the BIG EAST. St. John’s (14-14, 3-12) placed four players in double figures led by 12 points each from Rasheem Dunn and Marcellus Earlington. For the second time in the last three games, the Johnnies committed only four turnovers.
Saturday’s schedule shows three games. FOX has a doubleheader with Providence and Villanova meeting at Wells Fargo Center at noon ET. Seton Hall plays at Marquette at 2:30 p.m. DePaul visits Butler at 6:30 p.m. on FS1.
Home teams have won seven of the last eight contests and are 44-31 (.587) in league games going into Saturday.
