CHICAGO — Seton Hall opened with 12 unanswered points and never looked back en route to beating Butler 83-57 in Big East women’s championship tournament quarterfinal play on Saturday at Wintrust Arena.
Four players scored in double figures as the No. 4 seed Pirates (19-11) advanced to Sunday’s semifinals against top seed DePaul.
Guard Alexis Lewis scored a team-high 20 points, including five 3 pointers. Guard Lauren Park-Lane had 17 points, forward Shadeen Samuels collected 17 points and 14 rebounds while Mya Jackson had 13 points off the bench.
Guard Oumou Toure scored a game-high 22 points for the fifth seed Bulldogs (19-11) who finished in a five-way regular season tie for third in the Big East along with the Pirates.
It was the third win this season as Seton Hall defeated Butler 66-53 in a Big East regular season finale on March 1 and also scored a 67-62 triumph on Dec. 29.
The Pirates also hold a 10-5 all-time series lead over the Bulldogs. Saturday’s game was the first-ever meeting in a Big East tournament.
The Pirates opened a 48-25 lead by halftime with Park-Lane, Lewis and Jackson already in double figures. Seton Hall maintained a comfortable lead through the second half, holding a 64-40 advantage after three quarters.
Seton Hall’s 18 regular season and 11 in conference play were the most since 2015.
Players from both teams were saluted before the game for all-conference honors.
Butler guard Kristen Spolyar earned first team All-Big East while Toure landed on the all-freshman team. Seton Hall’s Samuels was second team all-conference while Jackson was part of the all-freshman squad.
