In Saturday’s action, Creighton increased its winning streak to six games, Seton Hall and Connecticut picked up road wins and Georgetown had a second-half rally fall short at Syracuse.
Creighton improved to 10-2 overall and 6-1 in BIG EAST play after a 97-79 victory over visiting St. John’s. The Bluejays, playing without Marcus Zegarowski who was held out with a hamstring injury, raced to a 56-39 lead by halftime and placed six players in double figures for the game. Denzel Mahoney scored a team high 24 points. Julian Champagnie had a career day for the Johnnies (6-6, 1-5 BIG EAST) with 33 points and 10 rebounds. It was the first 30-point double-double by a St. John’s player in six seasons.
UConn also was playing without its top scorer, James Bouknight, who suffered an elbow injury in Tuesday’s win at Marquette. Nevertheless, Tyler Polley stepped up for the second straight time, scoring a game-high 19 points in a 72-60 victory at Butler. Polley shot 5-of-8 from 3-point range. The Huskies (6-1, 3-1 BIG EAST) made 10-of-21 from beyond the arc, while the Bulldogs (3-6, 2-4 BIG EAST) were 5-of-15. Bryce Nze posted team highs of 18 points and six rebounds for Butler.
Seton Hall built a 12-point halftime lead at DePaul and made all 14 of its free throws in the second half to secure a 76-68 victory. The Pirates (9-5, 6-2 BIG EAST), who did not register a field goal in the final 8:57, were led by Jared Rhoden’s 18 points. The win was coach Kevin Willard’s 100
th BIG EAST victory including regular season and tournament play. Javon Freeman-Liberty tallied a game-high 22 points for the Blue Demons (1-3, 0-3 BIG EAST).
At the Carrier Dome, Georgetown (3-8) sliced a 16-point second-half deficit to three, but could not make it all the way back in a 74-69 loss at Syracuse. Senior Jahvon Blair posted the first double-double of his career with 16 points and 10 assists. Jamorko Pickett registered team highs of 17 points and nine rebounds.
Sunday’s only game is an early 11 a.m. ET tipoff on FOX between Providence (7-4, 3-2 BIG EAST) and Xavier (9-2, 2-2 BIG EAST) at Cintas Center.
Going into Sunday, home teams are 16-13 in BIG EAST play.
