DePaul Earns Non-Conference Victory

Both BIG EAST conference games went down to the wire on Saturday afternoon with one going to overtime.  DePaul stepped out of league play and rolled to a victory.

At Hinkle Fieldhouse, Butler overcame a 13-point deficit with less than eight minutes to play in regulation to score a 70-66 overtime win against eighth-ranked Creighton.  The Bulldogs (4-7, 3-5 BIG EAST) led the entire first half before the Bluejays (10-3, 6-2 BIG EAST) stormed back with a 23-3 run early in the second half.  Butler rallied to tie the game at the end of regulation and outscored Creighton 8-4 in the extra sessions.  Aaron Thompson paced four Bulldogs in double figures with 15 points.  Six-foot point guard Myles Tate scored 15 points and grabbed 10 rebounds.  Creighton’s Denzel Mahoney amassed a career-high 29 points, seven rebounds and three steals.  The Bluejays played a second straight game without Marcus Zegarowski, who is out with a hamstring injury.

At Carnesecca Arena, Koby McEwen’s driving layup with 27 seconds left was the winning basket in Marquette’s 73-71 win over St. John’s.  The Golden Eagles (8-6, 4-4 BIG EAST) blocked one shot attempt and a 3-point shot missed the mark in the final seconds.  D.J. Carton led Marquette with 14 points with Justin Lewis and Greg Elliott coming off the bench to scored 13 points each.  Julian Champagnie scored 18 of his game-high 20 points in the second half for the Johnnies (7-7, 2-6 BIG EAST).  He leads the BIG EAST in scoring with a 20.7 average.

After the postponement of Wednesday’s game against Georgetown, DePaul lined up Valparaiso for a game on Saturday.  The Blue Demons (2-4) used a 13-1 run in the first half and a 20-1 spurt in the second half en route to a 77-58 win at Wintrust Arena.  Romeo Weems scored a game-high 20 points for the Blue Demons and Charlie Moore added 14 points and five assists.

BIG EAST action continues on Monday with St. John’s playing at Connecticut on Monday at 2:30 p.m. ET.  The game will be carried on the FOX broadcast network.
