St. John’s Champagnie, Marquette’s Garcia Take Weekly MBB Honors

NEW YORK – St. John’s forward Julian Champagnie has been named BIG EAST Player of the Week and Marquette forward Dawson Garcia has been named BIG EAST Freshman of the Week.  Champagnie averaged 19.0 points in a pair of games for the Johnnies and  Garcia helped the Golden Eagles to a 2-0 week.
 
BIG EAST Player of the Week           
Julian Champagnie, St. John’s, F, So. – Champagnie averaged 19.0 points and 4.0 rebounds in a 1-1 week, while posting game-high scoring totals in each game.  The sophomore forward scored 18 points in a 69-57 win over Butler and followed that with a 20-point effort in a 73-71 loss to Marquette.  Champagnie ranks first in the BIG EAST in scoring with a 20.7 average. 
 
BIG EAST Freshman of the Week
Dawson Garcia, Marquette, F, Fr. – In a 2-0 week for the Golden Eagles, Garcia averaged 15.5 points and 5.5 rebounds, while shooting 55 percent from the field, 42.9 percent from 3-point range and making all six of his free throw attempts.  The 6-11 forward scored a game-high 20 points in a 79-69 win against Providence.  Garcia takes freshman honors for the third time this season.
 
BIG EAST Honor Roll
Myles Tate, Butler, G, Fr. – Recorded his first career double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds in an overtime win against Creighton (70-66).  Averaged 11.5 points, 8.0 rebounds and 3.0 assists in a 1-1 week.     
 
Tyrese Martin, Connecticut, F, Jr. – Scored a team-high 18 points and made a career-high five steals in a victory at DePaul (60-53).   
 
Denzel Mahoney, Creighton, G-F, Sr. – Scored 29 of Creighton’s 66 points in an overtime loss at Butler (70-66).  Grabbed seven rebounds, made three steals and hit five 3-pointers.   
 
Romeo Weems, DePaul, F, So. – Scored a game-high 20 points in a win against Valparaiso (77-58).  Averaged 13.0 points, 6.5 boards and shot 52.6 percent from the field in a 1-1 week.    
  
D.J. Carton, Marquette, G, So. – Averaged 13.5 points and 3.5 rebounds in a 2-0 week.  Had 14 points and three steals in a win at St. John’s (73-71).
