A four-game Saturday slate includes a doubleheader on FOX, another chapter in a longstanding rivalry and a first meeting in a non-conference matchup.
The FOX twinbill starts at noon ET when No. 23 Connecticut visits No. 11 Creighton. The Huskies (7-2, 4-2 BIG EAST) want to bounce back from a home loss to St. John’s on Monday. The Bluejays (10-4, 6-3 BIG EAST) have dropped their last two games by four points each with one coming in overtime. Creighton took the first meeting, edging UConn 76-74 on Dec. 20.
The second game of the FOX doubleheader has Providence playing at Villanova at 2:30 p.m. The Friars (8-6, 4-4 BIG EAST) will playing the fourth of four straight games on the road. PC ended a three-game losing streak with a 74-70 win at Creighton on Wednesday. Both of last year’s meetings were four-point victories by the visiting team. PC beat Villanova 58-54 at Wells Fargo Center. The third-ranked Wildcats (9-1, 4-0 BIG EAST) are coming off a 76-74 win over Seton Hall and are on a seven-game winning streak.
DePaul and Marquette are meeting for the 128th time. FS1 will televise the contest from Fiserv Forum at 6 p.m. The Golden Eagles (8-6, 4-4 BIG EAST) won last year’s meeting at home 76-72. The Blue Demons (2-5, 0-5 BIG EAST) have had productive play recently from center Nick Ongenda who ranks second in the league in field goal percentage, making 64.7 percent. Marquette’s Dawson Garcia leads all BIG EAST freshmen in points (13.4) and rebounds (7.3).
St. John’s picked up a non-league game this week, hosting Utah Valley at Carnesecca Arena at 4 p.m. on FS1. The Johnnies (8-7) won at UConn on Monday. Julian Champagnie leads the BIG EAST in scoring with a 20.0 average. Posh Alexander is first in steals with a 2.5 mark. Utah Valley (5-5) is in first place in the WAC with a 3-0 league record.
On Friday, the BIG EAST announced that the Seton Hall at Butler game set for that evening had been postponed due to COVID issues within the Bulldog program.
Going into Saturday, home teams are only 21-18 (.538) in league play. Four of the last five conference games have been decided by four points or less.
