#BIGEASTmbb Minute: UConn Defeats Butler

Three-Game Slate Set for Wednesday

In Tuesday’s only contest, Connecticut held Butler to 34.5 percent shooting from the field and blocked 10 shots en route to a 63-51 victory at Gampel Pavilion.  Each team scored 10 more points than they did in their first meeting, which was the 2011 National Championship Game.

Tyrese Martin led the Huskies (8-3, 5-5 BIG EAST) with 20 points on 7-of-9 shooting from the field.  Isaiah Whaley led the defensive effort with seven blocked shots.  For the Bulldogs (5-8, 4-6 BIG EAST), Bryce Golden scored a career-high 19 points.  Bryce Nze grabbed a game-high nine rebounds.
For Wednesday, BIG EAST fans can have their remotes ready at 7 p.m. ET when Creighton plays at Seton Hall on FS1 and Marquette travels to Providence on CBS Sports Network.

Creighton (11-4, 7-3 BIG EAST) won the first meeting with Seton Hall (9-6, 6-3 BIG EAST) 89-53 on Jan. 6 in Omaha.  The Bluejays, ranked 17th by AP this week, are 3-1 in league road games.  The Pirates are playing at home for the first time in 25 days.  The Hall has won its last 15 BIG EAST games when holding their opponent under 70 points.  In league play, Creighton ranks second in scoring offense, averaging 78.3 points per game.

Marquette and Providence have identical records.  Both are 8-7 overall and 4-5 in the BIG EAST.  The Friars won the first meeting 79-69 in Milwaukee on Jan. 12.  Nate Watson led four players in double figures with 18 points.  Like Seton Hall, the Friars are at home for the first time in 25 days.  The Golden Eagles have had very balanced scoring with Dawson Garcia, Koby McEwen and D.J. Carton all averaging slightly more than 12 points per game.

St. John’s plays at DePaul at 9 p.m. on FS1.  The Johnnies have won three of their last four games.  Julian Champagnie leads the BIG EAST in scoring with a 19.9 average.  DePaul is coming off a 68-61 win at Marquette and will play three of the next four at home.  The Johnnies (9-7, 3-6 BIG EAST) won both regular-season meetings between the two teams last year and Blue Demons (3-5, 1-5 BIG EAST) won both in 2018-19.

Going into Wednesday, home teams are 24-19 (.558) in league play.
