BIG EAST Attack Player of the Week
Joe Madsen, St. John’s, Grad Student, A (Locust Valley, N.Y.)
St. John’s grad student Joe Madsen scored four goals and added an assist in the Red Storm’s 19-18 overtime victory over Hofstra. The four goals were a team high. It was the first time since 2014 the Red Storm won its season opener. Madsen also picked up five ground balls. With Madsen’s help, St. John’s leads the league in goals (19.00), assists (10.00), points (29.00), shots (53.00) and ground balls (38.00) per game. SJU also leads the league in shot percentage (.358). Madsen’s 4.00 goals lead the league.
BIG EAST Midfielder of the Week
Alec Stathakis, Denver, So., Faceoffs (Northville, Mich.)
Denver sophomore Alec Stathakis went 17-for-21 in faceoffs to help Denver to a 15-6 victory over Air Force this weekend. He picked up 13 ground balls for possession in favor of the Pioneers. Stathakis leads the league in ground balls per game (7.75). He averages .619 (60-97) from the faceoff dot through four games for the Pios. Denver defeated Utah in the season-opener, 9-8, then lost to then No. 1 Duke, 12-10 and then-No. 4 North Carolina, 24-13 in addition to the win over Air Force. Denver is currently ranked No. 10/5 nationally.
BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week
Toby Burgdorf, Providence, Sr., Goalie (Westfield, N.J.)
Providence senior goalie Toby Burgdorf led the league last weekend in goals against average (9.00) and save percentage (.571). The Friars lost 9-8 to local-rival Bryant. The game was tied at 7-7 through three periods. In the first period, Burgdorf held Bryant to just one goal, saving four attempts. Providence leads the league in penalty-killing percentage (1.000) and saves per game (12.00).
BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll
Ethan Walker, Denver, Grad Student, A
Walker had a league-best seven points (5G, 2A) in Denver’s 15-6 win at Air Force. Walker has scored 12 goals with four assists for the season so far as Denver is 2-2.
John Hoffman, Providence, So., A
Friar attacker Hoffman scored two goals and added one assist with two ground balls and a caused turnover in the Friars’ 9-8 loss to Bryant.
Mike Madsen, St. John’s, Graduate Student, A/M
Madsen scored the game-winning goal overtime for the Johnnies in a 19-18 victory over local-rival Hofstra. Madsen finished the game with two goals, three assists and four ground balls.
